Stansted Olympic Movements – Including Soviet Airliners!

Made my first trip to Stansted yesterday, surprised it has taken so long to make it, but I thought with the additional Olympic traffic yesterday was a very goo day to chose. Unfortunately the weather was not a patch on previous days, however it turned out to be better and foretasted, and Runway 04 remained in use making things a lot easier.

Even with the additional Olympic traffic (some of which were biz jets) the place wasn’t exactly bustling, with a number of long gaps where eve the Ryanair movements stopped. However I think I got a very decent selection of shots, and have included a bit of the ‘more interesting’ scheduled traffic as well.

First up OM-BYO the Slovak Government Tu-154, albeit in bad light. A very nice visitor nonetheless.

Then the Czech Air Force A319, wearing a smart scheme. On a normal day this would have been quite a highlight, but was overshadowed somewhat by some other movements…

Such as the Russian State Transport IL-96 which arrived soon after. Surprisingly quiet, as it has most probably been fitted with new engines.

Followed by the Germans, in the Luftwaffe A319

And more Germans on the scheduled lunchtime flight from Dusseldorf.

Next the Dubai Air Wing 747:

And I certainly couldn’t miss the Aurigny ATR72!

Now, would you believe, one of the only passenger charters for the Olympics arriving from Amsterdam; a Transavia 737.

Followed by a very nice and rare surprise, the sole Air Bucharest 737 wearing a very nice livery. Supposedly positioning empty to operate the heavily delayed Wow Air flight from Iceland.

Followed by the Cello 146, wearing one of the finest schemes to have been applied to an aircraft at Air Livery in Southend….

I was also pleased to catch a Titan 737, operated a charter to cover for easyJet:

And finally, most certainly the highlight, the Ilyushin IL-62 arriving with more Russian diplomats. A very rare catch and fantastic to hear and watch, doing things which only Soviet airliners do, such as engaging reverse thrust before touchdown.

So all in all a very good day, and I hope that some of these were of interest to some.

Thanks for your comments EGTC and MSR777. There were some very nice catches indeed, making the trip down there exceptionally worthwhile. I was surprised that the IL62 showed up on Flightradar24. As with the North Koreans, presumably they came in via China on scheduled flights?

Some great shots. Living only 8 miles from STN, it was great to see these exotic birds fly in. I did also see the Azerbajani 767, and an Armenian A320. Thanks to Flightradar24, it was great to have advance notice of them coming. On the same day, I was following a German Govt. A340 heading our way, but sadly, it was still at FL300 over the Channel! It carried on heading west until it went out of range. I wonder how the North Koreans got here, is there an Air Koryo Tu204 or IL62 around here?;)
