About 6 weeks ago I bought a mountain bike with the intention of getting a little fitter and shedding some weight
I had not ridden a bike for 40 years and wasnt sure what to expect LOL
Anyway I stay with a friend in Devizes during the week and my normal evening training run is westward down the towpath at Caen Hill locks and as far as I can get to be able to return in daylight…or as far as a nice pub if my mate is with me LOL
Heron on Caen Hill

Bike on a swing bridge near
Seend
nr seend

Looking west at the Barge Inn ,Seend

Looking East at the Barge Inn ,Seend

It is a really picturesque stretch of canal and will try to remember to take more pics (phone camera) further west.
Kill or Cure ?? not sure yet,my 57 YO legs are always sore and my left knee is not enjoying the experience

Fair comment Moggy, but my gel saddle cost 10 quid from eb@y so quite affordable.
Most modern saddles have a central fore and aft groove/dip to remove pressure points from perineum/assteroids etc, indeed some are in effect 2 piece with a central gap between both sides.
I have never understood the idea of having an uncomfortable saddle, some of the american mtb saddles look really comfy 🙂

The saddle leaves one a little (a’hem, sore:o ) but I’m keen to keep at it and extend the rides slowly.
Before lashing out on a saddle do check proper cycling shorts or leggings.
They don’t have to be the Tour de France Lycra jobbies, some far more everyday kit is available for cycle tourists. But moving the seam from the centre of the crotch and the pad of chamois or something similar will transform the experience.
If you are cycling in jeans you will get what you deserve – great discomfort.

Kennet and Avon is beautiful. Amazing that it is there thanks to ‘People Power’ getting it reopened. Probably one of the prettiest in the country.
Absolutely…easy to forget that the canals/steam railways were resurrected mostly by volunteers !!
The K and A west of devizes sure is pretty…as soon as I get time,I will push out a bit further 🙂
cheers baz

Good luck with the bike riding. I hope you find as much enjoyment as benefit from it. Thanks for posting the pics too, it looks a nice peaceful area.

It sounds like you’re coming along so very well with it all! Good luck! 🙂
Bike riding can really get you into shape. one of the other trainee pilots at my flying school starting riding his bike to his work place every day, as he started doing it during the winter (and we dont do alot of flying in the winter due to poor weather) when he actually finally got to fly alot of the flying school members didnt recognise him as he had lost so much weight and looked alot fitter and healthier! 😀
I lookforward to more of those photos aswell by the way. 🙂

Thanks EGTC
I love biking on the towpath,it can be quite busy though – with walkers ,anglers and bikers !!
Its a wild ride down Caen Hill, but I am sure that the return journey is going to finish me off LOL.
I took some more pics tonight, but cannot upload until next weekend, the distance I travel has time restraints (ie after work).
But hopefully later in the year I will do a day trip out towards Bath,it is a really picturskew ride !!

I’ll check those saddles out – thanks !
My plan is to use it for quick trips for a pint of milk where I would normally drive, and to do a few 10 to 12 mile rides a week.

I’m doing much the same, I’m only 44 but got myself a bike last week-end with every intention of getting out on it, I’ve done 3 rides in 6 days.

Hi BSG
First thing I did was buy a comfy gel saddle 😀 the original was like a razor blade and definitely would not be good for yer assteroids LOL.
Good luck with your bike too.
I stick to mostly off road – cant see the fun in breathing fresh fumes on the road – cough, cough !!
