Was on Holiday 2 weeks ago and after seeing there was a fair Atlantic high building I decided to do a trip I have been thinking about for some time.
Swallowing my pride I booked with Ryanliar from Gatwick to Shannon,on final approach up the Shannon river I was hoping to get a pic of the old Foynes Flying Boat base but we turned final just inland of it so all i got was this yucky looking Bauxite refinery at Aughinish island

I picked up my renault twingo LOL  and drove down the south side of the Shannon – stopping for coffee at this ‘Cafe’ 😉

‘Cafe’ Building

Driving south west via Tralee (Tra Li) and Killorglin (Cill Orglan) to Valentia Island and up to the top of Geokaun Mountain…

more to come 🙂

Hi Levsha… I didnt do too well myself 😀
First visit to Ireland at the age of 57
South west of Tralee is just spectacular,I would imagine much of the west coast is very pretty.

Gee bazv, you’re going to see more of Ireland than most Irishman ever do – I didn’t get to travel ‘West of the Shannon’ till I was thirty years old myself!:o

Thanks for the kind comments guys…I will be going back, that was just a small window of opportunity at the end of 2 weeks hols.
Some of my friends have said I was lucky with the weather, but in truth I was lucky with the forecasting, same as my hebridean trips – I wont even think about going unless the forecast is reasonable.
The puffins were actually the final decider to go,I missed them on Staffa (fingals cave) -they are really cute little things 🙂

Thanks Steve – sorry forgot to return to this thread,I can see why you think they are related to penguins…but it appears they are more akin to Auks.
I have a few more pics from my camera phone, just got hold of a usb lead for it so will post them later 🙂

What a great pictorial Baz..looks a fascinating place that probably hasn’t been ruined by the ubiquitous tourist yet..that Puffin is a beautiful little creature ..obviously related to the Penguin family by the look of it

Thanks Sy…I had never been to Ireland before either, for many years (whilst in the RAF) I was simply not allowed to go there,it is really lovely on the west coast and I have done the scottish western isles quite extensively in the last few years.
They do not seem to get many brits visiting portmagee/skelligs,whilst I was there it was a mixture of Canadian/American/German/Belgique with a couple of N Irish/almost N irish!

Excellent pictorial, thanks for posting. I’ve never made it across the sea to Ireland and missed many an easy opportunity when I lived in the UK, so will have to make a special trip back to go one day.

A happy baz leaving skellig 😀

Little Skellig is home for approx 46000 breeding gannets – as you approach the sight (and smell ) is amazing

I originally planned to stay at a B+B right on a beach but then sanity prevailed and I stayed in one within walking distance of the Bridge Bar in Portmagee 😀
I knew either the friday or saturday might be the best day to go – in the end I booked both days 😀 they though I was mad…but as it turned out saturday was a cracker !!:)
The Skellig flotilla sets out,the other casey boat following us

Friday morning – down to Portmagee harbour to go with Patrick Casey in the ‘Ken B’ out to Skellig Michael Island, which rises to 700 ft some 8 miles out from portmagee.

Patrick seemed to be the only skipper to go out through the narrow cut from the estuary 😀

It was a wild ride out to skellig 😀 – target in sight
