I finally made it to the end on Sky Plus last night, did anybody else get to the end? I thought it was quality, very unusual main stream television, but the explaination to the “alternate” worlds was great.
Oh, and Gene Hunt of course, who else could say “Oi, I’m arresting you for mudering a car you Dyke digging toss pot” ? :diablo: before shooting the bloke twice !

Couple of my favourite clips.
the blue peter garden was the most hysterical T.V.moment in ages ( especialy if you remember sitting in horror as a teenager when jannet ellis broke the news
the faces were the same as they were back in the early 80’s watching that !!
sign of the times now the phrases ” whatever ” and ” it doesn’t surprise me !” are far more likeley !!

I loved the Camberwick green one! Was going to mention that before the good doctor beat me to it… The soundtrack all the way through was excellent, really carefully thought out quality music.

We’re not talking about minor changes here and there – they changed the entire bloody resolution of the series!
Ah, Mr B. You are truly Mr Consistent. 😀
There is a long and ignoble tradition of top-class drama and comedy series failing to survive the journey across the Atlantic unscathed (in both directions, I might add).
This is just one more.
the lost in translation i feel comes from jumping the gun in coppying life on mars too early
i feel it was always going to be five series with the last ashes to ashes explaining everything
if you remember in the last life on mars ( uk version ) sam quized the landlord of the railway asking ” where should i go ?? “
the landlord ( st peter ) said ” wherever you feel you should be !!
lots of life on mars linked with ashes to ashes
phenomenal writing for sure especialy linking bowies songs and lyrics
another way of knowing ashes to ashes was always planned is bowies lyrics for the song life on mars
” it’s an awfully strange affair for the girl with the mousey hair !!”
finnishing with ( we could be heroes , was class !! )

(and us Brits couldn’t do the Dukes of Hazard)
I.
This cracked me up, set in the west country or dorset, the Wurzles doing “just some good old boys, never meaning no harm”…..
making moonshine and having a get away tractor…..:diablo:

I thought the series was a great vehicle to get round all the politically correct crap forced on us these days. I love anything with a supernatural edge, but I must admit the ending still took me by surprise – I thought it was going to be parallel dimensions or something similar.
The only thing that spoiled it for me was Montserrat Lombard playing WPC ‘Shaz’ – she seems to play the same character in everything she does. It’s a personal thing of course, but I find her voice and looks quite repellant…

Surely the Americans just cannot do LoM and A2A, in the same way as they couldn’t do The Office? (and us Brits couldn’t do the Dukes of Hazard)
It dosen’t matter which great actors (I do like Keitel and Carell) they use in them, these programmes are something that really reflect a very British culture, and they were superbly acted by the British actors.

There’s only one Gene Hunt. 🙂
Seconded !!!!
Gene Hunt rules !
I think quite a few will concur with your findings, going off the comments on that youtube link I posted earlier:eek:.
As to which Hunt is better-

Judging the entire series by the last 10 minutes of the last episode?
Glad to see you keep an open mind…:D
And Harvey Keitel was great fun as the U.S. Gene Hunt.

I’ve never seen that before.
And, if the Gods are kind to me, I may never see it again.

I wholeheartedly have to disagree sir,I found the yank version cringeworthy to say the least.
But that, after careful consideration, is just my opinion.

But the stars were great, much better acted than the UK version.

Superb ending, far better than the ending the yanks had to their version of Life On Mars, which was utterly, utterly pants!
Which had them going to Mars in suspended animation…
It was dome better than it sounds. Really.
But the stars were great, much better acted than the UK version.

I’m with you on that, she looked stunning in the first two series, but not so good in the last one, unsure why:confused:
But surely A2A is a sort of remake of the Sweeney, with Gene Hunt kind of parodying Jack Regan, in spirit at least?
I think he does take a lot from Jack Regan, I find that The Sweeney still stands up for viewing now, it’s almost a costume drama, while it’s replacement “The Professionals” looks dreadful, and very low budget.
As for Gene Hunt, some of the non PC phrases, especially in Life On Mars will make me laugh for years. “First date, upstairs outdoors only….” cracks me up as well as some that are maybe best not posted :diablo:
By: pagen01 - 10th June 2010 at 11:57
probably her hair style typical 80’s stunning style in the first two series
what on earth were they thinking in the third series
i never knew any girls in the 80’s with such an awful hairstyle ( they were all very particular !! )they asked a genuine male c.i.d. officer if he played the part realisticaly
his reply was ” if anything glennister played down the bolshiness and violence ! “
Yes I used to know a guy that years ago served in the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad, he reckoned the Sweeney was tame compared with their own goings on.
I think the oufits title wasn’t just apt to what they were investigating!
And yes, I think you have nailed it re Keeleys hair, she has absolutely no chance with me now I’m afraid…
Not none…
Well maybe…
