"Comedy Roasts"

Anyone seen any of these on Channel 4?

I happened to turn on the Chris Tarrant one earlier, after watching a DVD, and have never failed to laugh at at least one thing Jimmy Carr has said…

…until this evening.

In fact, most of the “comedians” doing the roasting were about as funny as sitting in a cactus patch when you have severe piles.

Not. Funny. Whatsoever.

Yeah it was a “one show” thing, it worked OK but it was a filler in a slow spell I think.

Niles and Lilith, that was fantastic, with the room service guy and the ketchup…. “You have egg on your face” etc…. quality, and it lasted better than “Friends”….

I enjoyed every episode of Cheers and Frasier after that. The story on Frasier could have been different, but IMO the quality of the wit never “Lost it”. One of the finest US comedy shows.

I was not overly impressed with the episode with Bruce Forsyth as have not bothered since then.

As to American comedy in general I liked Frasier, I like “The Big bang theory” although I am not sure why.

Overall I just feel British older comedy shows were better written.

Really? I didn’t realise Frasier and Ros got together. I watched a few episodes after the aforementioned and felt it was sinking fast…

(Ironically, MSN has a feature on it today of “TV shows that lost it”….)

Inevitably it jumped the shark (the episode where Daphne and Niles FINALLY get together), but up until then it was always brilliant.

I think it recovered from that quite well as they didn’t make it easy for them, the mistake they made (IMO) was Frasier and Roz, Niles and Roz would have been far far funnier. (remember Niles & Lilith in the hotel room ?)

I have the whole box set and still watch them on Paramount every now and again.

Hmm disappointment… I saw the title of this thread and was hoping it was about a smug TV Chef (take your pick which one) making a complete cobblers of it 🙁

😉

Apple cobbler?

Bob – I have not seen any of them, and do not intend to, for the very reasons you have described in your post. They demean the “celebrity” as well as the participants and the audience. Garbage TV.

I thought it was awful – abusing the ‘guest of honour’ all night with the obligatory “I love you/respect you really” thrown in at the end (and even then not).

I read someones thoughts on these ‘roasts’ online last night. It covered the Chevy Chase one which was done after “Comedy Central” took over from the Friar’s Club who used to run them. It summed up the Shatner roast for me – a couple of his peers (in Shatner’s case, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei) turned up but the stage was full of people I’d never heard of and after their performance I won’t be tracking down anymore of their garbage.

I did see some of the classic roasts done back when actors and comedians didn’t have to pepper their roasting with profanities (I’m no prude but feel effing and blinding is a way to get a cheap laugh from an audience, often out of uncomfortable embarrassment) but got a laugh from gentle but sharp humour…

I never got as hooked on Frazier as I did on Taxi and Cheers. Perhaps I was travelling more and only saw it sporadically.

We’ve certainly imported a lot of their bad, cheap TV, such as tacky chat shows, bare-all revelation shows and cheap laugh shows………..but along with a few great comedies and series.

It appears to be a US tradition.

One that doesn’t survive the journey across the Atlantic very well, IMHO.

I think Americans have a slightly different sense of humour to the Brits 😉

But they roast Politicians and other society drains. What cannot be funny about that?

The old Dean Martin ones could be quite good, but the latest US versions are utter garbage.

The Dean Marin roasts in the seventies were regarded as quite hilarious in their day..they never really appealed to my sense of humour
