Thought you might be interested in a few photos from Iceland. The Mosfellsbær flying club has for a number of years now, held a flying-out day and taken the opportunity to land on frozen lakes around the country side. These are from this years fly-out.

Once watched a duck attempt a landing on ice like that.
Landing was fine, slid for about 100 feet and only stopped once it hit something heavier that it, namely a big rock.
bloody funny, but not so at the same time. 😀 :rolleyes:

Only just got around to checking these out.
Some stunning images there for sure. Makes me quite jealous.
The usual G-reg cluster at Le Touquet seems a bit unadventurous by comparison.

I think two feet will be enough, but 3 feet for safety. A 747 has a MTOW of over 400 tonnes, Even if the ice was 50 feet thick I think it would make cracks in the ice! And you should try to stop a 747 without wheel brakes. That is nearly impossible, the reverse thrust is only limited to a specific speed, which would make the landing distance extemerly long. The only brake you have if the reverse thrust is off, is air resistance (spoilers aren’t effective anymore at lower speed). It’s impossible.

Doe’s that come with the “Ice will not break guarantee” or does that cost extra?
Maybe they should try a 747 on ice.
