he died this morning at home.
I spoke to him once, in about 1984 I was in London for an interview and he was (no joke) looking in a Sue Ryder shop window and I asked him for an autograph to give to an old teacher who was a Labour supporter and big fan of Mr Foot.
Whatever your politics, and if you are aged about 30 or more you will know of Mr Foot for certain.

A fair old innings.
Foot was a great man and yes, I empathise with his politics.

Of course. He was an intelligent and principled fighter for left-wing causes and particularly his beloved Labour Party. His views were ones with which I had little or no sympathy but I respected him and always felt he was ill suited for the rough and tumble of party politics and certainly for the leadership of the Party.
As a left wing thinker, as an orator and and as a mentor he was a very significant figure.
how old was he – late 90s?
