Just seen in the paper that some academic thinks Thomas The Tank Engine is sexist. If she is so offended by it she doesn’t have to watch after all no one is making her. She could always go out and do some work. Reminds me of the young (Early to mid 20’s) female plumber on the regional news a few years ago. When she was told that a ball **** was not to be called that but a float operated valve her comment was that as it was a ball **** all through her apprenticeship a ball **** it would remain for the rest of her career and that she had no problem with the term ball **** and thought it likely that the only person who did was the person who made up the stupid rule.
Gave me a little chuckle that she seemed to take every oportunity to use the offending name as many times as possible.
Can you imagine a plumber going to his or her local supplier and asking for a float operated valve when asking fo a ball **** is so muc quicker?

I know, the mind boggles doesn’t it? I’ve no idea where these people get their stupid theories from I think we should say “S*d off” in no uncertain terms. Mind you I’m sure there is some part of “Go away” they would manage to misunderstand.

utter craziness! I heard one the other day. They say that girls that are brought up with pink stuff are more likely to end up in dead end jobs. So do i tell my daughter she cant have pink things anymore cos it’ll make you stupid? Gee zus!

OK I’ll go with that. Just nice to actually start a thread that got a reasonable amount of interest. Can’t you tell that’s never happened to me before?:)

Is it ‘international get your name in the newspapers week’ or something?
Thomas the tank engine is sexist, well possibly, but not as influential as say Christianity, Judaism or Islam, which IMHO are all a tiny bit sexist but I don’t see any of these academics having a go there!
“…a fat, jolly and somewhat tipsy Father Christmas sends out the wrong message and could damage millions of lives…”
Damage millions of lives, () possibly but so could the manufacturers of certain sugary brown flavoured drinks but I don’t see anybody criticizing them! I wonder why…
…oh yes…..Santa Claus wont sue your **** off in court will he? 😀

And now for the latest news about that dear old chap,Santa Claus.
Apparently he’s a health hazard.

I met the “real” Santa Claus with my grandson on Saturday. He seemed unaware of the latest requirements and since they only affect one of the many countries he has to vist next week I imagine the advice will remain consigned to the rubbish bin, where it deserves to rest in peace!

The person responsible for this tripe. Professor Shauna Wilton, is a Canadian academic, works for a Canadian university, isn’t all that ugly and has at least one kid. (I know, I know…)
Nice to see that old shape hasn’t lost his usual grasp for the facts.
NOT ALL THAT UGLY!!!!
I just Googled her, the monitor threw up! I bet that kid came out of a bottle! She’s so ugly it must be illegal to marry her in the English speaking provinces…the French ones are able to settle for mingers because they have several mistresses lined up.
Canada, I love it…been a dozen times to see my Sister and her kids, and their kids.
I never understand why half the country speaks French and the other half actually let them!
I always get the facts, then state the obvious. Basically, she’s a nomark pillock. As for anybody that thinks she’s right well in that case every single chilrens TV programme I’ve ever seen is also sexist. Why hasn’t she had a bash at Harry Potter? And the Canadian kids TV shows?
There is an old but VERY TRUE expression “Behind every good man there is a good woman”. I am not the first to admit that without my Mrs I would be useless. The in-borne tendancy to nurture, care, love, manage a family etc. will lead itself into a “Supporting” role. Live with it girls, in life you choose a career (And I mean a career – not just a job) or a family….if you choose both, one of them suffers – usually the family because you need the money. And, on that point, this “Academic” is therefore diminishing the supporting role, I see the support I get as absolutely crucial, in the home or in the workplace.

You’d think somebody somewhere would have realised that it’s pretty ludicrous for a professor to be studying Thomas the tank engine.I don’t see why it’s so difficult to accept that certain occupations are more appropriate to one sex than the other.Incidentally why do we now have to refer to a person’s ” gender ” and not their sex ?
How refreshing to see old shape taking a moderate line for a change !

It did have comedy value though. Even I’ll give the cynical git some credit for that! 😀

What must we now call the concrete lumps that are placed in roads to control the speed of traffic? ‘Sleeping policemen’ doesn’t tend to encourage drivers to slow down for some reason and ‘speed bumps’ is taken as an instruction!

She’s also right…..not that anybody seems to have noticed!

Thomas the Tank is sexist?
The (Ahem) Woman that thinks so must be a really ugly lesbian misandrylistic minger that could hold no other job than with a pinko looney Council.Put them in a field, and bomb the bast****.

Tell us how you really think…it’s not healthy to hold back.
Besides it doesn’t matter.
Thomas and his friends were strafed by Typhoons and Thunderbolts. RIP.

I’m surprised that this thread has generated so much response in the time it’s been going. Eleven hours, I must have touched on a sore point or three there.

So Professor Shauna Wilton thinks Thomas the Tank Engine:
“…portrays a world blighted by a ‘conservative political ideology’ and a rigid class system which stifles self-expression. And they are sexist.”
“…women are under-represented in the stories and what few female characters there are tend to have ‘secondary’ roles or be bossy.”
Well, she’s not wrong about that (despite being a woman :diablo:) but maybe she should think about who wrote the original stories…
…the Reverend Wilbert Awdry…..any clues there?
