I may be wrong, but surely that right belongs to every person in the UK entitled to vote – whether they paid Poll Tax or not?
You are right of course Tangmere.
What I was trying to put across. was that if everyone was having to pay for their council services, police etc, there would be more incentive to ensure that the money was spent more wisely and less waste.

Dear old Maggie, Best woman prime minister this country has ever had. 😀
As for the poll tax, IMO It could have been the best thing since sliced bread.
(My own Rates/council tax was halved, when we had Poll tax.)It gave the oppertunity of everyone aged 18 and over who paid this tax to have the say in running the country.
As I see it it gave everyone the right to attend parish council, county council meetings etc and to stand up and say As I’m paying for all the services I demand my input. But as usual apathy ruled.

I believe I am right in saying that one of the reasons there was so little industrial strife in Germany was because the British set up the union/employer relationship along lines similar to those proposed by you.
The problem here was that the unions, for idealogical reasons, and with a few exceptions, could never accept that it was in their best interests to encourage successful and profitable businesses. Many were infiltrated by Marxist idealogues whose purpose was to destroy the fabric of the capitalist state. Which is, of course, why Maggie did what she had to do.
By: mike currill - 16th November 2009 at 12:41
Which was not a totally bad thing as the unions had got to the stage where they were dictating to the government. The Trade Union movement was a good idea when it started out and while they stuck to their original purpose of looking after the rights of the workforce. When Thatcher brought them down to their proper position was the time to have disbanded the lot of them and brought in a legally binding charter which set out what the employer is obliged to do for the staff and what they are obliged to do in return. Any failing by either side should then go straight to an industrial tribunal to be sorted.
By: mike currill - 16th November 2009 at 12:29
Which means back to the unions ruling the government. I’m sorry if this comment upsets people but in my opinion the unions were a good thing when they were started and did what they were intended to i.e. see that the workforce got fair treatment from the bosses. Then they got ideas above their station and started dictating to the government. A charter of workers rights is long overdue which sets out what the bosses are obliged to do for their staff and what the staff are obliged to do in return with the unions disbanded. Any cases of the employer overstepping the mark or staff falling short of it should go straight to an industrial tribunal.

Come on be realistic. The peron actually resposible for the demise of British coal mining was Arthur Scargill. His encouragement of the miners to strike was based on his misguided theory that the miners could get away with demanding whatever they liked and not risk being sacked. I remember his ‘Strike for your rights brothers, they’ll never dare sack you’ speeches. Unfortunately for him and more unfortunately for the miners he was supposed to be representing the bosses did sack them.
Absolutely and in doing so she emasculated the unions for good and so neatly prepared the ground for Blair’s new relationship between the government and the unions.
By: mike currill - 16th November 2009 at 08:16
Margaret Thatcher was and is a blight she, destroyed the mining industry ,caused mass rioting with the poll tax (one of its architects being David Cameron) brought in the compensation recovery unit to retake monies from people injured and claiming sickness benefit (until paid their rightful compensation), lets not forget Cecil Parkinson who couldnt keep his trousers on etc etc ,plus how much did her government rip the country off with their expense claims, god help this country if cameron gets hold of the reins

You are quite right. It is a truely dreadful thing that I wrote. It goes against all my ideals.
I quite liked Major, thought his heart was in the right place.
I take it back.
However I really do honestly believe that she did some truely dreadful things.
