I have no idea what the film was called or what it was about. I must have been around five or six when I saw it. If my memory serves me well, it might have been similar to the final mission of HMS Campeltown.
I also remember the son (of the captain?) asking his dad this question. His dad then looked at all the toy soldiers that were strewn across the floor.
Anyone here have any idea what film this was?
Thanks
Peter

Could the film be ‘Attack on the Iron Coast’?

I’ll go for “In Which we Serve” (this can get pretty expensive)…
It probably wasn’t ‘In Which We Serve’ as that doesn’t feature a climactic end mission…..I thought of it because it does feature a captain and conversations with his son.
There was another (fairly low budget) film featuring a St Nazaire type of raid but it was not black-and-white.
I seem to remember that in that film some men were killed in training as the commanding officer was pushing them too hard. Sounds a bit clichéd…..so that’s probably where a script-writer would have had his son ask ‘how many soldiers he had killed that day’!

Nope! It was not “The Gift Horse”. I’ve just seen it, it was pretty entertaining; a lot of it reminded me of “The Cruel Sea” which is far better though.
The film I’m thinking of was probably produced in the fiftees or sixtees. I think it might be too dramatic to be a wartime production, but I might be mistaken. It was in black-and-white. I’ll go for “In Which we Serve” (this can get pretty expensive) but otherwise I haven’t got a clue.
If my memory serves me well, it was a true war drama, but it must have had a “U” or maybe an “A” certificate as I saw it as a small boy. I don’t rmember much but I remember the scene where the skipper(?) of the ship was asked by his son when he came home how many soldiers he had killed that day. I think the son was called Timmy. The ship was most likely sent on a suicide mission and rammed a harbour. I think the skipper died during this mission.
Any more ideas?

After doing a little googling and thanks to Creaking Door I think it was this:

I’ll see if I can find it on dvd.

Brit film or US?
Or, it wasn’t the comedy “What did you do in the War daddy” was it?
