Director John Hughes dies age 59

John Hughes director of so many 80s films has died of a heart attack in New York.
He was the director on such films as “The Breakfast Club”, “Planes trains and Automobiles”,”Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, “Pretty in Pink” and “Weird Science” as well as “Home Alone”.

As a child of the 80s I tend to feel his films shaped a lot of my days then and they still stand the test of time especially “The Breakfast Club” which for me is a classic.

I would honestly say “Breakfast Club” and “Planes trains and Automobiles” are classics of their time, And if you look at the list of films he done it arguable that he shaped a lot of the humour of the 1980s with films like “National lampoons vacation” etc.

Getting Oscars or Oscar nominations is not necessarily proof of the quality of a film or a director, But it is proof you have “made it” with the establishment. In terms of John Hughes I feel he aimed his films at families with children and teenagers for the most part, Not for everybody all the time but entertaining nevertheless.

Home Alone has always been my favourite film.
Such a sad loss.

I personally consider Planes, Trains and Automobiles a masterpiece, and is far better than most movies that have won Oscars.

Most of his other films that he wrote, produced and/or directed were great.

I think you had to be around 16 years old to enjoy most of them…;)

He never made a B movie Steve

Perhaps B grade was a little harsh…however his movies were very puerile…nothing he ever made yelled “Oscar”

I’ve never heard of him, but as you listed his films I realise that I should have. Great films, especially FB Day off.

You probably know more of the films he was either director, writer or producer on than you realise.
He was clearly a great talent but one who preferred to be behind the scenes rather than in front of the camera.

Have a look at his Wikepedia page for list of films,

“While the rest of us were just thinking about it…Ferris borrowed a Ferrari and did it…all in a day.”

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. Great film and one of my all time favourites. Like yourself duxfordhawk, I was 17 when it came out, and it and the other films bring back memories of those teenage years. I agree with you, Hughes did seem to have an ability to capture the spirit of the times.

Happy ( mostly ) days !!! Good chance of the DVD getting an outing tonight again !

Bueller ?….Bueller ?…Bueller ?…!!!
