I’ve just watched “Churchill’s Darkest Hour” from a few weeks ago on Channel 4 about Operation Catapult and the attack on the French fleet in North Africa. What a decision to have to make at that time. Your army pushed out of Europe, your air force engaged in the world’s largest air battle at that time, your navy needed to police an empire and defend the Nation. As with all such stories the truth will probably never be out entirely, but it was a well balanced programme with no major judgements I felt. One French sailor at the end who survived expressed his anger; another said “who ever heard of an intelligent war?” If it shows again on a repeat I can recommend it to anybody with an interest in the period.

it was good…….but Churchill had to make a decision….if that fleet had fallen into German hands that would have been terrible for us and possibly a change in the outcome of the war. It was regrettable but hindsight is not something everyone is blessed with. The French head of the Navy later became Vichy PM….so could he really have been trusted?
