I was in the MT branch for most of my RAF service. I joined an MT-related website and someone there has recently asked about the ‘rules’ governing post-war RAF MT vehicle Registrations. I was certain that I could find this out but, having searched my own extensive book and magazine collections, I cannot find the answer. I have also tried the Internet – again, with no luck.
Does anyone out there have the answer please? What I am specifically looking for is an explanation for the classification of registrations such as:-
37 AA 87 (typically a Land Rover), 75 AB 67 (a saloon car), 58 AC 98 (a bus/coach) and so on. Note that these registrations are “made up” for illustrative purposes.
In other words, what decides which vehicles are included in those groupings AA, AB, etc., right through to ….. AZ ?

Thank you very much BAZV
That mafva suggestion was really useful! It certainly gives some guidance on the numbering and has enough information to see the underlying logic that is applied.
This was my first “real” venture onto a forum and I am so impressed by the experience that it may not be my last!!

In fact there is a list of reg numbers in a modellers forum but not the reasoning behind the system

Hi Butz and welcome to the madhouse…er i mean forum :D.
Most of us ex service people on here probably spent more time thrashing the poor old Landrovers etc around various airfields etc rather than thinking about what the numbers meant…I do have some ideas about it – but it is only a guess…
Have you tried the Historic Military Vehicles Forum ?

That bunch seem as sad as us on here 😀
But I think you may have a good chance of an educated answer there.
