DON'T PANIC! DON'T PANIC! 2cm snow on the way!

BBC is bleating on about ‘ the worst snow event in 7 years’ coming in tonight.
Needless to say, you ‘shouldn’t travel unless your journey is neccessary’ and there may be widespread disruption.

Is this more BBC ‘crying wolf’ with yet another colourful and dramatic prediction which never happens?. Like the ‘hurricanes’ which turn out to be a breeze, or the ‘heatwaves’ which feel like comfortably mild.

It seems that they are determined that whatever the weather, they can say that we were warned. It must be the global warming…..

It’s snowing again – coming down to the north of England from Scotland. Not a lot yet but it is all on top of the fall we had at the weekend which is now quite icy. And I was trying to work on the car.

I had to take it to Ambleside for an MoT on Tuesday and walked back. Here’s a couple of pics of the walk home (cheaper than the bus)

To Troutbeck and home

Got to take the car back for a re-test tomorrow. Might try the walk again but it depends on the weather.

a lot of panic going on, but last night, a guy in a people mover got stuck at the end of our road, my wife tried to go round him so as not to hang her car out onto the main road, she got stuck, as did I behind her, and somebody behind me.

without any asking, we all (with 2 passers by) dug and pushed each other out and onto our drives, perhaps no more than we should, but being a cynic, I was chuffed to see the consideration for others and the willingness to help.

I was stuck on a roundabout on the way home in the afternoon snowfall, again, a guy appeared from the car behind me to push me on – fair play to them all I say!

The modern standard fit fog lamps are a waste of time anyway as they shine about 2 feet in front of the car. I hardly use mine except as a parking aid in very dark places.

Hillman Imp (remember?:D) was the bee’s knees in snow conditions!

I parked at my dentist the other day next to a 3/4 scale replica Hillman Imp…

…at least I think it was a replica…..or were they always that small?

Just did the school run as we have 2 inches of slush on the road and I’m on hols. Left 15 mins early – I thought that was the trick.

Noooooooooooooooooo – what you do, and I share this freely with forum members, is put your fog lights on, and then drive as normal…. it must melt the snow as you go you see, then the rear fogs make sure ot doesn’t freeze up behind you.

So, Fogs on, Foot down – thats the ticket……

I got more misanthropic by the second on days like this…….

:mad::mad: Foglights grrrrr why do idits leave them on when there is no fog or heavy snow.
It is damm annoying , when there is a car in front with them on , all you can see is damm bright red lights.

That certainly is extracting the urine and driving unsafe, yes! Idiots who drive like that in such conditions deserve to wrap themselves around a lamp post, preferably without killing anyone else in the process.

Paul

I agree with you there, but the sad fact is that 90% of the time these idiots will wrap themselves round somebody else’s car , and they come out of it with out a scratch, but the poor 3rd party badly injured.
Then when they get to court ,all they get is a poxy ban and **** poor fine really makes me so mad.

Stay well away from them – driving too fast for the conditions but only peering at the bit of road immediately over the bonnet 😮

A Renault Clio diesel was the best I had for snow. Small, low power (and all at low revs), thin tyres – but best of all, a huge, heavy, cast iron lump of an engine right over the driving wheels

I found another form of stupidity today. Went to our local Sainsbury’s and one corner of the car park still has packed snow and ice on it. Everyone negotiating this corner had voluntarily set up a sensible one way circuit then this big black beast of a car comes creeping the other way and snarls everything up. As soon as I saw it side on I thought it had to be a BMW or Audi. Sure enough it was a BMW driven by someone old enough to make me look young. What is it about BMW’s and Audi’s that makes most of their drivers idiots? They seem to think logic and common sense don’t apply to them as they have the right to do whatever they like.

In snow you need a small car, low power and most of all…..thin tyres.
A 2CV or an old mini will run rings round almost anything (non 4×4) on the roads! :diablo:

Foglights ? Be careful not to encouter the police … In many places, that’s seen as road rage 😉

The trick is called snow tyres … And when so equipped, in those areas where people don’t know what snow is, if you are on a freeway where ne lane is still snowed in, but still practicable, drive in it. You’ll be twice as fast 😉

And if I had to ask something to all the people who drive in snow conditions when their driving skills mean they should leave the car home and walk,, it would be: WHY do they always have to stop when the road is going uphill, and so blocking the streets ???

They’re not endemic to the UK i’m afraid Paul…we have them as well!!!

So does Germany. Audi drivers who speed up to overtake you then cut across in front of you to leave at the next exit in almost blizzard conditions. They’re accelerating at a time when they should be slowing down.
I got a heck of a surprise yesterday morning. Went out at 10.30 on Wednesday night to put rubbish in the bin and it was clear and dry, went out to take Mrs C to work yesterday to find everything covered in 4″ of white fluffy stuff. Been having about1″ an hour since 6.30 today and still falling so I’ve no idea how long it’s going to last.
Just been called out to go to work on a 10-10 shift. Oh well it pays the bills.

I was in my mums wee Yaris today down in Kelso, going to Yetholm and there was about a foot of snow that was falling while I was doing it. Somehow, I managed to use my savvy and get the car between the two towns, up steep hills and round bendy corners; solely through the use of the first two geers and lots of revs. Passing more ‘powerful’ cars (including four-wheelers) on the way that had ‘got stuck’ and gave up.

It’s not all that bad if you’re careful and know what you’re doing. Some people really do just give up all too easily.
