Right, I am very fed up at the unreliability of the cheaper Mp3 players. Most of which have the Sigmatel firmware in which is as stable as feather in a wind tunnel set on full bore.
So, I’m prepared to spend a little bit more £ but cannot decide between an Ipod Nano or a Zen. The latter gives more Gb for the price but do I get anything else for the extra money on the Ipod?
I’m not too bothered about the plethora of add-ons available, nor am I bothered about any “Coolness” about owning an ipod.
I just want to listen to Mp3’s, look at Jpegs and maybe look at movies (.mov, .avi and .mpeg)
Which would you choose and why?

I don’t own one (any mp3 player), but I hear the Archos products are pretty good: http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/index.html?country=global&lang=en
They are until you have to send them back to be repaired, the after sales service is a nightmare.

Well,
I went out for a pint of milk and noticed that Tesco had a Sony NWZ-A818 (8gb) player for sale (From £80 down to £60).
Bought it.
Put 5 gb of songs on it and 845 photo’s.
The simplicity of use is perfect, the sound quality is blowing my mind! Tiesto, Orbit, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Genesis, M.o.Sound, Johnny Cash, Carole King, The Who, Smiths, Talking heads, Motown and and and….all sound fantastic. I am mega impressed!
Photo view doesn’t appear to have a zoom, so I’ll make a special folder on the PC for downloading to the player, with suitably cropped piccies.
Oh, and can anyone rekmend a decent (Free download) Mp4 converter (From avi / Mov). I’ve tried one (From Brothersoft)but Sophos Anti virus warned me it was Malware so I removed it.

I got an iPod Nano for Christmas – my first mp3 player and a really lovely bit of kit, simple to use. I also got one of those little radio transmitters for it so I can play it through my (very old) car radio. That is well worth having.
But then I’ve also recently borrowed an iPhone 3G. Touch screen, GPS linked to Google earth, internet access, iPod, e-mail, absolutely amazing. Apparently you can also make phone calls from it.

I had a stunning little MP3 player by Sandisk which was easy to use, until the cat knocked it off and shattered the screen by knocking a heavy glass dish on top of it. Sandisk don’t do customer relations or repairs.
Now have a stunning 16G MP4 Sony Walkman, its bloody stunning. Walkman MP4 Its very simple to use, syncs easily through media player, and holds a hell of a lot. iPods are the devils work.
Thanks Kitty, I like the look and spec. of that.

I’ve had various versions of the Microsoft Zune for a few years now and have no complaints whatsoever with it.

I can only second GA’s opinion…
I bought myself an Ipod Nano this fall, and, unknown to me, the day I went to buy it was the one when the new ones came out.
I’m quite impressed with the quality of it. Its only drawback: the edges are a but too sharp, but you won’t get hurt, so I guess it’s ok. And the fact it was a metal shell decided me for it, I hope that I won’t destroy it too fast.
As for the movies, you’ll have to convert them to use on an Ipod… And forget WMAs. Apart of that, nice piece of kit 🙂

I used to regard the iPod as a fashion accessory for people with more money than sense.
Until my wife bought me a black iPod Nano a couple of Christmases ago, that is.
Now I seldom leave the house without it. It is, as the saying goes, a lovely bit of kit.
The iTunes software is, without doubt, the work of Satan but there are alternatives out there – and they’re usually free. 🙂
The standard earplugs aren’t up to much either, it has to be said.

Thanks for that.
They seem to be good kit, but even more expensive than Ipod.
