Manchester, Late 80s

Hi,

I have spent the day going through some of my older photos, and thought some taken at Manchester in 1988 and 1989 may be of interest.

Here is Star Air F-27 OY-SRR operating a flight on behalf of Loganair:-

Star Air now operate a large fleet of 767 freighters.

Loganair also provided an interesting aircraft in the shape of 1-11 G-AZUK, which they operated while waiting for their 146s to be delivered:-

Air Canada operated a sceduled service to Toronto for many years. I have alway thought that the TriStar is one of the best looking airliners around, so no apologies for including this shot of C-FTNJ

A slightly more interesting photo is this shot of Points of Call Canada DC-8 C-FNZE.

Points of Call was a very short lived Canadian charter operation, who operated just this one aircraft.

Another DC-8 operator visiting the airport was Trans Ocean, who operated transatlantic charters from a number of UK airports to the US for a short period:-

Cargolux deployed a couple of 747s on charter services from the airport under the name Lionair. One operated to Orlando, but LX-FCV was dedicated to operating to Barbados on behalf of Caribbean Airways

These aircraft managed to rack some pretty impressive delays, but not as many as N602FF. FF was leased by Air Europe from Tower Air, and the aircraft’s regular delays became something of a tabloid sensation during 1988:-

Another interesting US registered aircraft was American Trans Air 722 N288AT. Although Amtran’s TriStars were familiar sights at UK airports, their 727s were somewhat rarer on this side of the Atlantic, but this aircraft spent a summer operating on behalf of the long defunct Paramount:-

Another interesting Paramount sub charter was Liberia World 707 EL-AJT:-

Regular charter traffic was provided by Adria DC-9 YU-AJF. The aircraft had just returned from a lease to British Midland (as G-BMWD), hence the livery:-

A more interesting charter visitor was London City Dash Seven G-BOAW. London City was set up by British Midland to operate services from the airport that gave the airline its name, and at the weekend in the summer the aircraft were used for charter flights from a range of airports to Jersey:-

Air France operated a number of services to Paris each day. The lunchtime service was operated by TAT Fellowship F-GBBS:-

Note the two Okada 1-11s in the background waiting to be delivered to Nigeria.

To end, here is another Air France aircraft, Concorde F-BVFC. This was a busy day at the airport, as FC was joined by F-BVFA at the airport, and they both operated a number of charter flights, which meant that the much mourned viewing terrace was packed all day:-
