Complaining has got out of hand!!!!

Yes, this is because now people are complaining about Last Sundays top gear. This is because Clarkson said (it wasn’t aimed at anybody just his humour) “lorry drivers all they do all day, is change gear, eat, change gear, change gear, eat, change gear, kill a hucker, eat, change gear, sleep etc” and because of this people have complained saying it was “offensive” (i wasn’t at all offended infact am offended at them complaining about something that wasn’t even offensive).

But what i don’t get is, doesn’t common sense tell you that this must of been approved by the BBC? and wouldn’t you turn it over instead of been a TW*T and carry on watching it?

According to the GMTV it could be taken off the TV, but if they did I would think that there would be more complaints about the Programme going off air than they would about if been “offensive”

About time this complaining people got a GRIP!!!!!!!!!!

SlightAll this boils down to is opinions, opinions, opinions.

Absolutely, and everyone is entitled to ONE! 😀

Perhaps I’m just from a generation that has become more accustomed to a ‘new’ form of comedy……. Perhaps if you look at the demographic of those who officially complained, it might reveal that the majority all lie within an older generation and perhaps this may be because they have grown up with a set of different values.

Not entirely accurate, being one of the ‘older generation’ myself, I’ve managed to keep up with so called modern comedy, but much of it leaves me thinking that Lord Snooty and Desperate Dan were much more amusing than Little Britain etc.:p

I respect your dislike of the issue and seeing as this is a good natured internet forum, all I ask is that you appreciate the fact I have a different opinion. The extensive divide on the topic clearly shows that there are a lot against the incident and a lot that were not fazed by it.

Well said!

Can you please not attempt to generalise myself and my behaviour based on one remark on a topic, in a forum, where the outlying goal is to observe other people’s contributions? I don’t appreciate being victimised because I was the one who chose to express my opinion, out of others on this forum and countless more who are not part of it.

You might get used to being victimised for whatever reason, I managed it on one forum, simply for being older than anyone else there!:D

This is the last I am going to say on the matter, as it is against the CoC to have an argument in the open forum and I do not want to be moderated 🙂

Good thinking!;)

Funny, you dont appreciate being victimised yourself but you find the victimisation of the elderly hilarious.

The problem is that your opinion makes it very clear that you reagard prank phone calls to elderly people with the intention of taunting them about the sexual activities of their grand children. A disgusting act irrelevent of age, only a poorly educated hooligan would support such an idea and in no way is it a ‘new sort of comedy’.

Your sense of morality and social responsibility is clearly misguided. I assume that you will be throwing eggs at a nursing home tonight just for the comedy value?

Slight over exaggeration perhaps? All this boils down to is opinions, opinions, opinions. Perhaps I’m just from a generation that has become more accustomed to a ‘new’ form of comedy. I know for definite that the media has vastly broadened the range of what some 18-30’s consider ‘shocking’ and ‘disturbing’. Perhaps if you look at the demographic of those who officially complained, it might reveal that the majority all lie within an older generation and perhaps this may be because they have grown up with a set of different values. This wouldn’t be the first time (and it certainly won’t be the last) that a figure in the media has caused controversy due to a comment or act made towards an individual.

Exactly,
Exactly. I can only assume that symon believes it is also his right to put fireworks through peoples letter boxs.

The right to freedom of speech comes along with the responsibility to respect the privacy and feelings of others. You can’t demand the former and then shirk the latter.

If people in general were as concerned about their responsibilities are they are about their rights, then we’d all be a lot better off.

This is not a freedom of speech issue and it is perverse that some (including you) have managed to make it as such.

I do love the amount of times I’ve been abroad and found myself queuing for something (as if by second nature), only to see that the ‘natives’ are just piling on in!

I’m part of the “what is all the fuss about?” gang. If nothing else, there are worse things going on in the world and there are more important things people should/could be doing than complain about something they’ve not even heard/seen (although yes, everyone is entitled to freedom of speech).

I think the worst thing is (from Brand/Ross’ POV), is that Sach’s knew about the calls before the show was broadcast and gave his OK for a selection of clips to be aired in his absence. Then what happens? Some talented (to some (including me)) entertainer had to lose his job because people were jumping on a bandwagon?

Anyway. If there was one thing that made me laugh more than Clarkson’s original “lorry driver” gags on episode 1, it was his blatant refusal to publically apologise about it on episode 2!

This is not a freedom of speech issue and it is perverse that some (including you) have managed to make it as such. This is about it is fundementally wrong to prank call the elderly and leave them messages taunting them about the sexual activities of their grand children.

Sachs did not know that the comments were going to be broadcast, he had said ok to a heavily edited version not the one that was broadcast.

The Clarkson prostitute comment is free speech related and of dubious offensiveness, which is why there were so few complaints.

I find it troubling that you regard bullying the elderly like an out of control teenager as talent.

Not the only one, i found that funny too.

Why should Clarkson apologise for doing abosoutley nothing wrong. He is allowed freedom of speech in this country, he expresses it through humour, so why the hell complain about him. He has done nothing wrong.

Queueing and mild casual alcohol-fuelled violence are what we do best!

…Ross has been replaced on Saturday morning on Radio 2 by Richard Mallinson, the most dull, boring, patronising radio presenter ever to grace any radio station

Ah.. you never listened to any of Michael Parkinson’s programmes then?

Still at least we didn’t get Mark Lamar and Jo Brand

Moggy

I think you might find the presenter is called Richard Allinson

Just noticed this thread. I watched the episode in question on iplayer just the other day after hearing about the controversy. I can see nothing wrong with what Clarkson said, clearly just a normal light hearted comment from Clarkson. It ain’t his first that’s for sure.

I think political correctness has gone too far generally. I seem to recall that a few years back there was some debate about a school called St Thomas’ Roman Catholic school in an area where there were many Muslim immigrants. The council decided that the name of the school must be changed in order to not upset the local Muslim community. There were many complaints from parents and teachers and local residents. However one particular letter of complaint stood out the most. It was from the local Islamic Community group who reported that none of their members found the name of the school offensive in any way but they did see the council’s action as offensive in that it was giving the local Muslim community a bad name over something that was not true

Ok, Old Shape, I agree with everything you say, does that make you feel better, don’t get so upset about it.
What upsets me about the whole affair is that Ross has been replaced on Saturday morning on Radio 2 by Richard Mallinson, the most dull, boring, patronising radio presenter ever to grace any radio station, talk about pretending to be safe, if thats the best they can do, then it’s back to Planet Rock Radio on a saturday morning for me.

PT, I’m not upset. It takes real issues to move into my emotions.
I agree, Saturday morning will be Discovery/History Channel on the telly for me for next 11 weeks. Unless decorating like today, in which case I’m stuck with that dimwit on R2 (The dial on the Bush look-a-like Radio is broken….fixed it once, it’s a chord driven wheel affair, but is twanged off again)
