Helios Airways 522

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, if so, please move it!

I am off to Greece in the next couple of weeks, and I wish to visit the crash site of Helios Flight 522 at Grammatikos.

My question is; On some photos I have seen of the site, the jet’s tail unit is visible. Is it still there? Is there a memorial at the site?

TIA,

Jason

Do you intend to take parts from the crash site? In much the same way that most high ground wreck sites in the UK have been plundered?

Was there really any need for that?

In the search this appears to be the most recent post, so i will add this here:

This is the HUD video from HAF F16 that had intercepted the flight and continued to fly next to it up to the end. It has english subtitles for the comms.

Five to be charged.

Still waiting for your findings Jason!

Criminal charges are going to be filed in connection with the crash.

Helios Flight 522

I have established that there is a memorial shrine dedicated to the victims of Flight 522.

Referring to my original question – Is the tail unit still there?

It is the dominant feature in many of the accident photos, and I was wondering if it was left there as a memorial in itself. (I am informed that large parts have been left at a couple of other Greek crash sites.)

TIA,

Is this the aircraft which was intercepted by fighters and it looked like there were no crew on board. Who were in fact out cold.

That’s the one. Apparently one of the stewards tried to regain control. He was seen in the cockpit by one of the F-16 pilots sent to intercept.

Why would anyone want to go to a place like that??

For the same reason I (and many others) visit high-ground crashsites in the Derbyshire Peak District, for example.
Out of respect & remembrance.

And no, I’m not a relative.

Should be in General, I think?
