Can anyone help me to identify these tools and what they were used for, not sure if they have any connect with aircraft but must be in engineering somewhere.
1. Looks like an old hand drill, with a screwdriver tip held by a bolt so assume other ends/bits could be added. However when handle is turned the shaft turns a quarter of a turn three times, then reverses and go two quarter turns back.

Must be at least 50 to 60 years old. Know of a similar one in Australia (green one)which has a different end. It has millers falls stamped on it. When handle is turned the paddle moves backwards and forwards in a half rotation.

Can find no ref to this on millers falls tool company site.

2.Can only give you the dimension. Base diameter 2.5 ins Height 9 ins crosspiece 9 ins (could be the other way up). Adjustable up and down (wings broken off wing nut) the hook and pointer end are sharp points. could be some kind of marking device.

The marking device for pottery was also used as a cutting tool to ensure the pot was the same size as the last one…with the same shape at the cut too. That’s how I saw it being used at a College demonstration once.
I’n not convinced about the others being a valve grinder, the valve needs holding by the valve end, and pressure applied to it so the mating face beds with the female part in the Cylinder Head. That’s why today’s tools is just a wooden stick with a sucker on the end.
This pictured tool would not give a smooth enough movement, nor can it apply pressure from the correct direction.Could be wrong, but I’ve ground a few valves in my time.

Thankyou. I knew I’d seen that scriber device somewhere now I know. Isn’t it annoying when someone asks what something id and you know that you know the answer deep in your memory but can’t recall it?

Might just have found out what these tools are.
1. Valve grinding tool. Must be a lot easier on the hands, than the dowel with rubber suction pad.

These two comments were on the Australian web site where I saw the green one.

Andrew NSW
Used to grind valves in motors the paddle end goes into the slot on the top of older style valves and when the handle is turned it only turns the valve half a turn.

Fred Murrell NSW
The tool is a valve grinding machine made by the Millers Falls company in Millers Falls Massachusets USA around 1915 or a little earlier.

2. Could be a marking or scribing device used in pottery

Regards Richard.

No idea what the ones with the windy handles are but the marking tool looks familiar and it bugs me that I cannot remember where I’ve seen one.
