Batteries…. a painful lesson!

Hehe nice one Phil, made me titter. 😀 I wonder if kids get up to such larks these days, or are they all molly-coddled?

Well me being a bright one as a rug rat :rolleyes:, who had many many toy’s with battery’s.

I had the Mattel ship thingo with a rescue Helicopter, that would wiz around in circle’s a high speeed, chewed batt’s like anything!:(

So my Dad had kicked the bucket by now, SO I thought I would Charge some battery’s hey! 😮

Well me and a mate about the same age, connected about 8 D cell’s together end to end, like they should be, + -, + – so on.

Then tapped em all together…………….

Got a two plug cord from me lamp that was knackered, Made twi wire’s out of it, then connected it to the battery’s………..

Put it all on me bed then threw the 240 V 50 hertz……….:D

WELL there was a blinding flash and bang:eek:, when the smoke cleared my bedroom, the battery’s had dissapeared some what, and burnt right though the bed clothe’s and what was left was smoldering in side my mattress :cool::cool:

No Dad for a right beltin, But me Mum sure gave me a blasting and a thick ear:D :diablo:

PS blew the fuse and NO it did not charge me battery’s……….:o :p 😀

Didn’t ever try it again………….young Phil Albert the math Kraut Scientist retired that day,…………well chargin me battery’s anyway…….:cool:

NOW the home made bomb’s I built………………:eek::eek:

Ouch! It’s actually amazing how quickly even AA batteries can heat things up, as I found out many years ago messing around with one and the bit of tin foil from a tube of Polo mints. Became red hot and burned away quite nicely… Electricity is fun!

That said, I run a lot of my sound systems these days on three phase 63 amp supplies, so with 415 volts flowing around the place I tend to respect that a little more! 😀

Spoke to someone at the cricket club last night who told of a similar incident with his mobile phone and the metal necklace thingy on his works ID card in his shirt pocket. Killed the phone and burned his nipple!!

Spent the day watching my lad play cricket on Sunday. What a beautiful day. Took both my camera, my SLR and my little “slip in the pocket” compact. the little one (camera not son) eats batteries, so I slipped a couple of spare AAA batteries in my shorts pocket. Well, the heat was getting to me, so a visit to the club house for a refreshing pint of cider was in order. So there is I, reclining in the sun, cider in hand, watching my lad play. Perfick. Then I started to get a strange feeling in my leg. Seemed to be tingling. I have back problems, so thought nothing of it, just me nerves again thinks I. Then it started feeling warmer, very quickly, then intense pain. Initial thought was a wasp had crawled up my leg and stung me. Then more pain and heat. Put hand on pocket and ….OWWWWWW! Pulled out pocket lining, where the two batteries and the change from my pint spilled on to the floor….. both absoloutly red hot, and I mean red hot. Thechange and batteries must have caused a short or whatever in my pocket. Result. Melted nylon lining of pocket and big blister on thigh. Damned sore!
So, obvious top tip of the day, don’t keep batteries in your pocket with change. 1.5V x2 can be darned painful!!

Oh and we lost, but Sam got a decent wicket!

I had a nasty experience with a battery in my younger days..i was doing this party trick where you stick your wet tongue on the end of a battery and you get a tingle…….the hood fell on my head!!
