Hi all. While I was just doing a spot of theory there, I was just wondering to myself. Do any of you play musical instruments too?
I play piano, violin and clarinet, but also have 2 recorders, harmonica and an ocarina … I don’t play the latter of those.
Also, if you play instruments, what are your opinions? Do you have a preferred genre? Your favourite piece?
Also, even if you don’t play istruments, do you like instrumental music? Do you like a particular style.

Well a bit like PMN I am a bass head ! I’ve been a bass head since around the age of 15, some 22 years ago, when despite pleading with my parents to buy me a drum kit, they decided an unpluggable instrument was the best option for tenement dwelling.
My late father was a gigging guitarist most of his life, I used to get up early on Sunday mornings as a child, with a mission to free his acoustic from it’s case and attempt to play ‘Mull of Kintyre’ using only my strumming hand. He could never understand my fascination for rhythm and percussion as much as I could never understand his facination for Bob Dylan and folk music. In later years we came to understand and respect each other’s ways… even if the neighbours didn’t.
Around the age of 16, I made my debut performance in the high school xmas production of ‘Grease’ as bass player in the house band. To this day I’m still not sure whether or not I was offered the gig due to my prowess as a musician or the fact I had a cool looking leather biker jacket ?
Later in my twenties I gigged and toured regularly with various projects, finally backing out of the gigging when I embarked upon my career as a television camera operative with ‘auntie’. I still enjoy the occasional strum however, having inherited my father’s collection of acoustic guitars, as well as my remaining two Fender basses and my Gibson ‘Les Paul’ electric six string..
One of these days, the comeback tour will be announced…:D 😉

Well, i don’t play any instruments… but i am a drummer!!!
😀 😀 Me too!!
I started of with latin percussions when I was at high shcool (or lukio as we call it) and have had a full drumkit for around year and a half now.
I’m still learning to play, only proplem being the limited time that I have peace and quiet with my kit (which naturally ends soon after I take my place behind them). I’m basicly trying to learn to play all the Zeppelin numbers under the logic “If I can master the Bonzo’s impossible patters, I can master anything”. Other stuff that I like to play and listen falls basicly to same cathegory as the above band like The Who, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and so on..
Also in very recently I’ve started to be more and more interessed about Indian music, exspecially palying the tabla drums (tough I don’t have tablas, so I have to use my Bongo’s to imitate them). As I have no idea of the theory of the music, neither the western nor the indian, I just listen and try to figure out what they are doing with which hand and try it out myself…with various success sofar.

I’ve been playing guitar for a while now. Most of what I play probably falls into the death metal category, much to the dismay of my neighbors :diablo:

Well, i don’t play any instruments… but i am a drummer!!!:diablo:
Been playing for about 20 years, started off as a roadie for various touring bands, then became a drum tech for a band, eventually joining bands myself. Done the “let’s get famous” bit for a few years, then a bit of depping in cabaret bands, then discovered the joy of playing covers—ROCK covers,Being a bit of a die hard rawk fan (the guys in the band call me “Thunderbucket”….. i play a wee bit loud and heavy:cool:) Due to work commitments i have to be flexible about playing, so, doing the covers circuit is great, only just last week had my first gigs with my new band “CHARGER” in Glasgow, after 8 months of rehearsing… went great, next gig is in Dunoon in may, looking forward to that. It had been nearly 2 years since i last gigged.
My music of choice is Classic Rock, huge Status Quo and Rush fan, not too keen on boy rock bands about just now…. no creativity! A bit of an old headbanger really, outside of Hard Rock i love Simple Minds (Mel Gaynor… outstanding drummer!)
Like some blooz, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Albert Collins etc…

I like anything from most genre. I just can’t stand things that are like boom boom *rap and swear* …

I’ve been pretty much obsessed with bass guitar for the last 10 years and am a very keen player (although not a terriffically brilliant one!) I also play drums a little so I’m pretty much someone rooted in the rhythm section.
In terms of musical tastes, I simply like anything I consider to be good, and that could be in any genre although particular favourites would include James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Sarah McLachlan and The Eagles.

Play an Instrument?
Hello,
Yes……………I play Drums in a Shadows-style Band. Little Brother (he’s 60!) on Lead Guitar, Sis-in-Law on Bass, Younger Son on Rhythm Guitar, and Niece on Keyboards. We play most weeks, mainly for our own enjoyment, but occasionally do “proper” gigs. We LOVE it!!
My own musical tastes, however, DO go a little beyond 1960’s Pop. Me and my Wife really enjoy acoustic Blues
(espec. Delta Blues – Robert Johnson etc etc), and Blues-oriented rock – there are quite a few British Bands doing this (The Nimmo Brothers, Matt Schofield Band, Ian Parker Band, to name just a few) who REALLY deserve far greater recognition than they actually get! . I also like Jazz, with a bias towards Guitar-based stuff like Wes Montgomery, Johnny Smith and the like. Continuing the Guitar theme, I also like almost anything by the late (Great) Chet Atkins.
Well – you DID ask!
Regards
Paul
