He was a wife-beating drug addict; not exactly a great role model. …

Yes true he was not a great role model, But he was i feel he was quiet rightly a hero to people for what he did stunt wise and not for what he may have been in real life, Essentially Evel Knievel almost like the heroes we would read about in comics etc just in the real world, He knew well how to market himself and very much knew that people engaged with him as the maverick hero, Who would do the things most of us would be too scared to do.

So yes maybe he was not all sweetness and delight but concidering the fact we just have talentless reality show people these days for kids to look up to, We were probably better off with Evel in our day.

He was quoted in a movie lately…

If you are interested by a quite silly movie, just watch “Hot Rod”. It made me laugh, but maybe because it was at the end of a transatlantic flight

I think I’d put it somewhere between some bad MTW stunt show (without the vulgarity), and American Pie…

Maybe we could find a film star, athlete or pop star.

I never got the whole Evel Knieval “thing” and I say this not in defense of him, but…
Role models haven’t been around for a long while.
Even if there is someone we admire, wait 5 minutes after their death and someone will come along with a book or rumor.
Nowdays we seem to have to know that Churchill drank, Gibson reportedly had an unhappy marriage, Patton & Monty had egos, Steve Irwin let his son too near the crocs…so most of our heros had the normal human flaws.

The Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers are dead…and I’m not feeling too well myself.

Robert Craig Knievel Jnr, you were my one true childhood hero, I will miss you, a real entertainer.

Never mess with Evel…..

Even in retirement he could not keep out of the spotlight. The publication of a book written by his former publicist Sheldon Saltman, which painted a less than rosy picture of his family life, angered Knievel.

Despite having both arms in plaster he attacked Saltman with a baseball bat. He was jailed for six months.

Heaven will be a richer place with Evel at the table.

John.

I remember him well, as a 70’s kid he was every boy’s hero. I even had one of those wind up toy motorbike things that were all the rage back then. I wonder if the funeral cortege will jump over twenty London buses on the way to the cemetary ???
