While the sound fidelity of CDs over vinyl is very substancial, one area where the technology is not ready to leave analog is studio recording. There is no way that recording digitally on to a a harddrive has any where near the bandwidth of what is captured on tape. Of course since its analog, it impossible to measure the acutal bandwidth, and since the vast majority of people cant hear the difference in sound quality, there is little reason for the industry to go back to the old way.
I certainly prefer plugging my bass through my valve pre-amp and recording onto a nice big 24 track tape machine than firing it into Protools. 🙂

I read the first three posts before I became to bored to continue! 🙂
I know people see things differently, but this isn’t a technical issue to me. I personally prefer the warmth of vinyl as a format to CD. The question as to which is ‘technically’ better has no relevance to me. Don’t get me wrong, I love digital as well, but in terms of sound vinyl wins for me, but I’ve always used my ears and not my eyes when judging a sound!

This is an oft-asked question.IMHO,it depends on the quality of the original recordings and the quality of the re-play system.
See more technical arguments here.
The quality of the artwork remains the same,no matter what the size. That’s up to the printer to get it right;) .

I think you guys must be a little to young to remember when snap, crackle and pop were the only game in town, not to mention 8 tracks clicking right in the middle of a song. Oh what a godsend cassetes were.

From a purely sound perspective I have to say, I prefer vinyl. Digital certainly has its place though!
