Living in Manchester

hey all

I need to start thinking about the possibility that I may have to find a place to live in Manchester – and I want to get a bit of background knowledge first. I know nothing about the area or the city, other than its got an airport at one end.

For the Manchester locals on the forum, where in Manchester is cheap, nice and safe to live in – I would be looking for a one bed flat or shared house to rent, possibly in an area with a student population and/or near (ish) the airport.

any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Adam 🙂

Bradford.
Thinking about it, some areas are’nt all that bad, it’s just the number of dustbin sacks about that gets me.
Shipley is cool, particularly that bit where the funny little railway is, lovely spot.
We once went round Saltaire Mill, we were having some lunch in the cafe and realised that the bloke sitting on the table next to us was David Hockney, well he sponsors it doesn’t he.
After daring each other to ask him to autograph a poster, he dissapeared.
When we left, we held the door open for a bloke coming the other way and , yes, it was DH, my mate was struck dumb, we never dared to ask for that signing, could have boosted my pension big time.

Bradford is just the pits, on the other hand, their Seabrooks crisps are the best, absolutely blow those Leicester creations away, move to Bradford Mr Lineker and learn what a real crisp is all about.

And I live a mere mile away from the factory those wonderful crisps are made!

As much as I dislike Bradford, these were all taken within easy walking distance of my house so it could be worse. Bradford also has a nice viaduct, although it’s some four miles outside the city. Just try ignore the shot of the burnt out car!

Stockport may not be the greatest place on Earth, but it’s nowhere near as crap as Bradford!

Stockport! From what i’ve seen of it, it looks a complete dump, almost on a par with Bradford! Personally, I think both Manchester and Liverpool have good parts and bad parts, just like anywhere really!

Try Stockport, nice place and not far out of Manchester.
We used to go to Manchester regularly in the early 70’s, I had a lot of mates at Uni.
Great place, good clubs, very friendly, Liverpool however was a dump then, you could get guaranteed bricks being dropped off bridges on the East Lancs Road.
Last time I went and stayed a few years ago, we went to Liverpool and found it a great place, totally transformed.
On the other hand, attempting to take a narrow boat through Manchester was tricky, the boat hirer only let us do it because of the number of hard looking males on board. We were actually met by the police at one point and told to watch our backs and that most of the fishermen on the banks were actually undercover cops.
It wasn’t pleasant, we nearly had a stone parapet pushed off a bridge, and we only ever saw one other boat, manned by a terrified couple.
Still, we survived, but I’ve not been back since.

I used to live in Wythenshawe for a month or two. It’s not a nice area at all, full of chavs.

Chorley and Didsbury are apparently nice.

Atleast you wasn’t living in Mosside :diablo:

Adam, I tell nothing but the unvarnished truth.

All these Mancunians just want you to suffer as they have to.

:diablo:

Moggy

The only good thing ever to come out of Manchester is the A580 (East Lancs Road)

Yes, of course, if you want your car on bricks within the first 15 minutes of your arrival, Liverpool really is the only option. 😉

…And Wythenshawe, flight path or not! :diablo: ….

What are you trying to say, like?

He did say he wanted an area with a large student population, and Wythenshawe doesn’t have one. :p

In general, crime is no worse than in any other large city, but avoid living in Longsight, Levenshulme, Moss Side, or Rusholme like the plague!!!

I don’t live in Manchester, but having travelled the country quite extensively and having been to Mancheter and Liverpool more times than I can remember there’s no question in my mind where I’d prefer to live, and it isn’t Liverpool! Any city has its good and bad parts. Even this disgusting, dull, dark hell hole of a city (Bradford) I live is has some wonderful areas around its suburbs, it’s just a case of finding them. I must say though, as a city I much prefer Manchester. I’m far happier walking around there on my own at night than I am in the centre of Liverpool. Manchester seems to feel much safer to me. Plus, it has a better airport!

Good luck with whatever you decide anyway, and if you do end up residing in Manchester, I’ll look forward to seeing many photo threads from there. 🙂

Adam,

Forgive Moggy – he knows not what he says! 😎

If you want a rented place in an area with a large student population and reasonable access to the Airport then you should be looking at Didsbury.

Plenty of students, loads of pubs with live bands, lots of eating places and shops and you can easily get to the airport by bus if you’re in West Didsbury, or by train if you in East Didsbury.

In general, crime is no worse than in any other large city, but avoid living in Longsight, Levenshulme, Moss Side, or Rusholme like the plague!!!

Good luck. 🙂

Living in Manchester is an oxymoron.

Live in Liverpool. You can then commute to Manchester and spend as little non-work time there as possible.

Unless, of course, you are of the gay persuasion in which case Manchester will be like a home from home.

Moggy 😉

Ha – ignore the Moggies wailings…

1) South Manchester is nicer than north but more expensive.

2) Liverpool is OK for nightlife, but always has and always will be a S***hole as far as living there goes. Manchester is now far, far, far better for shopping, museums, nightlife, green areas and ,errr, anything else really – it has totally transformed itself since the IRA bomb went off.

3) people living in Manchester hate the “Gay Capital” tag – it only applies to a small area of pubs and clubs and is only kept alive by the money-grabbing council and “entrepeneur” types who wheel in a bunch of out of town gays to put on the gay week parade thing each year to simply to line their own pockets.

Every year it nearly gets cancelled because they spend the weeks preceeding it squabbling about the money side.

At least you dont have that problem in Liverpool, i suppose…
