Your thoughts on music generally.

My missus and I like to consider that we have pretty eclectic musical tastes and like a whole range of things, right across the board. We both have the ability to play guitars, she’s classically trained and once played at the Royal Festival Hall, I’m just a thrash or accoustic self tought person that doesn’t practice enough.
Last night, we watched Jools Holland, the reason being that Macca was on it.
We both thought he was the dogs b######, must be something to do with getting away from Long John Silver.
Now, I am the ultimate Beatles fan, right from when they started, I’ve always thought that on their own, they never quite got it right, because they missed each others kick up the backside.
But I could talk for hours about that, the point is, with one exception, and that was Adele, the rest of the acts were totally purile, what planet is Bjork on, does anyone really buy this crap?
What was sad was that Billy Bragg was in the audience, he should have knicked the guitars off some of these eejjits and shown them what it was all about.
Afterwards we watched the highlights of the Isle of Wight Festival, the bands were mainly quite good, especially Snow Patrol, however, Echo shouldn’t have bothered with his new Bunnymen and gone back to the pub.
I shall look forward to tonights feasts of plenty.

I don’t really have a taste for a certain genre of music – like kev35, I like a huge range of stuff – If i like it, I like it. The only two genres that I don’t generally listen to are jazz and what I would term ‘hard heavy rock’ with people screaming into their microphones – not singing; screaming. What I decide to listen to depends very much on my mood, and I wouldnt be able to get through a day without listening to my music – it keeps me close to being as sane as possible.

I find that I’m a really big fan of film soundtracks, and will usually find myself visiting iTunes after watching a film – I bought the theme tune to ‘Cider House Rules’ yesterday (great film with Michael Caine and that Tobey Maguire dude).

There are a whole load of tracks that mean a lot to me – pieces of music that bring back memories or, just like kev35, provide a back drop to my life.

There is a piece of music at the moment which strikes a real chord within me, and that is the ‘Lindburgh Palace Remix’ of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’, which is top of the chart at the moment. The first time I heard it, I was pretty close to having a car crash and dying or being seriously injured – a taxi journey to an airport at 5 am with a few friends, the taxi driver fell asleep at the wheel for a second or two doing 50mph on a single carriageway, and the car mounted the curb. After this happened, to keep himself awake, the driver opened his window and turned on the radio – ‘Umbrella’ was the track that came on. The music has come to symbolise that whole day for me.

Never has something turned myself and my 3 friends who were with me into such quivering wreaks. Never have I seen them so scared.

My missus has always fancied going to Glastonbury, having been to such events in the 70’s, I’ve tried to put her off, because it may look fun on the TV, but when you are actually there, it’s grim, and watching wall to wall coverage on the digi box last weekend, she’s had to concede to the awful truth that it’s better to sit at home and watch it from the comfort of your living room.
Thats by the by, our impressions on the event, and we watched a lot of it, were that most of the featured bands were crap, and this was a view shared by our 2 youths aged 13 and 21, they should know.
Why so much publicity and coverage was devoted to that useless, pathetic little s###, Mika was beyond me, is he paying someone.
We were looking forward to Amy Winehouse, wow, her band were brilliant, but she was obviously out of her head, get a life Amy and watch how a real proffesional called Shirley Bassey knows how to deliver.
As far as the contemporary bands were concerned, Kasabian were cool, Kaiser Chiefs just went through the motions, but were pretty good, but the stars of the show for me were the Arctic Monkeys, a band that I didn’t particularly like before, but I really thought that they did a really good set, and had real charisma on stage.
Can someone please tell me why they bother paying that heroin fuelled git with Babyshambles and his similarly charged up famous model girlfriend to attempt to perform anything, they could have done better cleaning the toilets, though they probably would have fallen in, and no doubt enjoyed the experience.
As for the old boys, Shirl was brilliant, I liked John Fogerty, despite his dyed ginger mop, Iggy was hilarious, but I found the Who a bit predictable, I never liked Tommy anyway.
Very dissapointing this year, hopefully Radiohead will come up with something for next year, now their’s was a set never to be forgotten, it still sends shivers up my spine just thinking about it.

I’ll listen to anything, dependant on my mood. Good moods mean anything from the 50’s upto about the 90’s, Country music and for a good old bad mood nothing beats a bit of Iron Maiden & Guns n Roses. However, my all time favourite has to be this: Massed Corps of Drums of the British Armed Forces. I still play my Tenor Drum for my Old Farts Association. Bex

I don’t really have a ‘taste’ for music. If I like it I like it, from Pinky and Perky through to Classical acts and a little bit of everything in between. What I do know though, is whether I think about it consciously or not, music has tended to provide a backdrop or context to all of my most powerful memories. A case in point. I wrote this about searching for a grave connected with the loss of P/O Percy Leslie Moxey (type that name in a search on historic and you’ll find the thread). I wrote the following which described what happened after finding the grave and heading back to my car…..

“I took a couple of photographs and will get them developed tomorrow but photography is not my strong point so I’m not too hopeful. Anyway, it was just so easy to find him. I walked back to the car and turned on the radio. Any ideas what was playing? Hymn to the Fallen. Just about says it all doesn’t it?”

Regards,

kev35

I have quite an eclectic range of musical tastes (even if it does provide some of my friends with amusement!), and I’ll pretty much listen to anything – except “manufactured” music and crappy cover versions – I dunno which annoys me more!!!

” Music is a creative passion to feed the soul ” as I have read somewhere and I do agree. I am personally great fan of music. I can listen to most types of music (but not a great deal of Rnb/Dance). I like to listen to rock music and it’s various subcategories, Old music, 80’s stuff (Introduced to this by a forum memeber on here ) and I also like to listen to music from other cultures and languages. Some that i’ve listened to at the moment is Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Polish, Vietnamese, Japanese (Jpop), Korean (Kpop) and Chinese (Cpop). Also I like music of the great composers (Beethoven etc) and playing their pieces on my piano.

So all-in-all, I think music is a big part of civilization and it’s important to know about not just one type of music but to expand and appraise music from all angles.
