On my way home from Biggin Hill i decided to go and see the aftermath of the Crane accident that occured on saturday afternoon.
As some of you already know this was the hotel where many of the pilots and crews for Biggin Hill Airshow were staying, Sadly the crane driver has been badly hurt but having seen the damaged it looks like could have been so much worse, I hope the gentleman involved recovers soon.

Sadly this is the second incident in Croydon in the last month or so involving a crane, Last month a crane broke a rope and nearly the whole of Croydon was blocked off for over 12 hours causing traffic chaos until the early hours of the morning.
There is a hell of a lot of building work going on in Croydon at the moment and i think these two incidents are going to lead to questions on safety being asked.

I remember a few years ago doing a site visit to a block of 4 storey offices I had designed in Bishops Stortford.
A massive mobile crane had arrived and was lowering some very large steel beams into position on the top floor.
The overturning alarm kept going all the time and you could see this thing twitching. I queried this but was told it was no problem, in the end I wasn’t prepared to put up with it and walked off site, no H & S inspectors in those days, but it wasn’t good, however no one was prepared to consider it dangerous, apart from me, I told them, but it had no effect, they just thought I was being over cautious, too right.
Fortunatley nothing happened, but it was a dodgy moment, bloody builders always know better.

Steve its under investigation at the moment, Eye witnesses have said it was trying to lift a girder at the time it happened, Weather is probably not a factor as was a calm sunny day.
The news today say the Crane worker is serious but stable today which is at least good news.
