New CPUs

Intel Core 2 Duo versus AMD X2 AM2 (who thinks this up???). Which is fastest?

I have been a long-term purchaser of AMD. However tomshardware.com seems to suggest that the Intel is presently ahead of speed. Are they right? Prices don’t seem to vary much between the two manufacturers anymore so I could be swayed toward Intel…

ATI make some very good graphic cards. The Nvidia 8800, DirectX 10 compat card has just been released in time for MS Win Vista. Expect ATI to follow soon.

ATI have become part of AMD. This means that AMD can now play Intel at their own game AND perhaps do even better as they can combine AMD CPU’s with ATI chipsets and graphics for an integrated AMD / ATI solution.

Ta, probably will be Intel then.

Am thinking of a Nvidia 7300GS to replace my Nvidia 6600. In the same vein with breaking what I have always gone with, are ATI any good these days? They used to have cards that weren’t powerful to Nvidia chips, sometimes caused PC resets whilst under load and had poor driver support coupled with a confusing website.

Budget by the way here is eighty pounds.

C2D has got more cache to offer than an X2, therefore a far better performer in multitasking. All that while remaining very competitive in prices. Buy a X2 if you’re only going to be playing PC games with little or no multitasking else go for a C2D proc.

I thought the AMD X2 AM2 was the competing dual-core CPU?

Core 2 Duo is the best for now… that’s till AMD brings in it’s new line up of processors.. But for now, C2D is way ahead of AMD – especially if you’re looking for games and crunching numbers.

Core 2 Duo is currently the fastest out there. Nothing wrong with AMD though. I use an AMD 3700+ CPU at the moment running at 2.2Ghz.

Intel now has a Quad core CPU out…..

My current laptop has the Duo processor. Haven’t had any problems with it at all.
