I have been having a real blast lately with a series of strategy games I found in the bargain bin at my local games shop. I found the “Sudden Strike” series, I now have SS1, SS2, SS Forever and Days in the Field which is basically the SS games set in the early Cold War years. Despite picking them up for a mere £2 each and though they are not amazing graphics wise, they’re extremely addictive. I am currently having my a** handed to me by the allies as I play the german campaigns and despite the graphics being kinda dated the forces at my disposal are quite accurate and the fighting can be intense!!!
Are there any similar games out there that are more modern that don’t require mega-powerful 3d graphics cards???

There’s nothing wrong with ‘Age of Empires’ but I find it doesn’t grab your attention as it’s a bit simple.
I would recomend ‘Medieval Total War’, it’s strategy and you can control the battle. Iplayed the old one but not the new one but the old one is still fantastic!

I’ve played Age of Empires: Age of Kings as well as the add on which included the Aztecs and Mayans. The game on a whole is ok just nothing special about it and the A.I. can be a bit annoying at times. Played the Star Wars games which were basically Age of Empires but with the characters from the movies. That was ok for a while just again got a bit boring (kill him, build that etc etc). Have been told about Homeworld before and I had the chance to buy it but passed it up for Star Trek Armada II which was great, loved the fact u could build the Cardassian Galor Class warship and the Romulan Bird of Prey.
If you have the chance to get them, get the American Conquest series of games. The offer a lot of fun and again u get to field huge armies, including merc’s u buy from native American tribes in exchange for gold. You can find them in the bargain bins and despite being older games they are addictive!
Will try to find Homeworld, I know it is quite a common game to see on the shelves 🙂

I used to play lots of Sudden Strike, made me quite a few levels with the editor.
Rome total war is probably the best strategy out there, and its only £10 now. Its conventional but of a very, very high quality.
If you wanted something a little different, Homeworld 2 is nice. Its a space strategy game set in a 3D space environment. The original Homeworld one is still around as well and both are again £10 ish. The original has a better storyline (which is the best i’ve seen in a space game), but the second is more fun to play.
Lastly, all of the Command and Conquer; the first decade is now out. Its got the original CnC, Red alert, Renegade, Tibirian Sun and Generals, all with their expansion packs, its one of the best £30 you’ll ever spend.
The original Age of Empires, dated but fun, is out for a fiver these days.
The best space strategy i ever played is Pax Imperia: Eminet Domain. Its really old, but incredibly fun and addictive, and will always have a special place in my heart.
Well, I hope some of this helps, have fun!!!
