Does anyone have information on Virgin Atlantic’s Athens-London service that operated in the 1990’s. Flight Numbers, Schedules, Aircraft Type and Callsigns would be helpful. Cheers in advance…

I think it is interesting that nobody has mentioned the Vickers Viscounts which operated in VS colours inthe 1980’s, serving Maastricht from LGW. Go find those photos…. 🙂
Oy! 😡 Look two posts up from your original comment! There’s even a clue there as to where you can find a photo!

Come to think of it they used Boeing 767’s for a while too, leased from Martinair I think ?
They did indeed, to operate MAN-MCO 🙂

You are an old man Moggy, and it shows 😉 😮 😀 😀
Has its advantages 🙂
I’ve flown a Shackleton (Pretty straight and level stuff under very close supervision as a 15-year old cadet)
I’ve had air experience flights in a Varsity.
Flown in a DC3 on scheduled passenger service
Took my first flight in a Fox Moth for 12.5p
Will retire earlier than most you children 😉
Don’t have to worry about global warming ‘cos I’ll be out of here before it’s much of a problem.
(Oh, and my mortgage is just about £55 Grand and finishes in less than three years) 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
Anyway back on topic.

I’m sure we’ve talked about them on other threads – or maybe it’s just another old man’s memory playing tricks? 😉

Love those aircraft.
First propjet (G-ARIR) I ever flew in. (The only airliner I flew in before that was a Viking 😮 )

They still do, don’t they?
It’s only when you look at a thread like this that you realise how many types have operated in Virgin colours over the years, and that they weren’t always so image conscious as they are now.
1L.
Yes, they still do, but thats because they’re in the Air France family now, with AF owning a stake, but when CityJet first started they operated in VS colours, until the route didn’t match VS’s strategy.

As for that Cityjet Bae146 shot. Didn’t they eventually operate as a franchisee of Air France in full AF livery?

The A320 and A321 were used on the Athens routes. It looks that the 320 was based at LGW and the 321 at LHR.
The A320 was based at LGW but operated from both LGW and LHR (one flight from each, each day) until VS got the slots at LHR for both services. The A320 was originally EI-VIR before it was G-OUZO – I flew on it LHR-ATH-ATH in May 1995 VS1002/VS1003 to spend a few days at the famous Emantina in Glafada – ah, happy memories!
Virgin also used several other non-standard aircraft, including several different Viscounts (only one at a time) on the LGW-Maastricht route:

and several Irish registed 727s (operated by Club Air) on Med charters LONG before Virgin Sun was ever dreadmed of:

Wasn’t Athens operated by South East European Airlines under a framchise agreement?

The BAe 146 is one of two ex-Crossair BAe 146-100s that Cityjet operated on DUB-LCY flights between Jan 1994 and June 1996 as a Virgin Atlantic franchise.

leased from Martinair I think ?
’twas indeed 🙂 . it wasn’t in VA colours for very long

Virgin Atlantic did use an A320 and A321 on a route to Athens – A320 from mid 90s and then replaced by the larger A321. the aircraft was in the fleet up to about the 00s
The route and aircraft was dropped becuase of a)9/11 and b) becuase the aircraft did not fit into VA’s future.
hope that helps

I couldn’t understand how single aislers would fit into VA’s profile in the 90’s ? As for that Cityjet Bae146 shot. Didn’t they eventually operate as a franchisee of Air France in full AF livery?

I’m not sure about the BAe 146s though, sorry.

And here is the Bae146: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=923557&WxsIERv=Oevgvfu%20Nrebfcnpr%20ONr-146-200&Wm=0&WdsYXMg=PvglWrg&QtODMg=Ybaqba%20-%20Pvgl%20%28YPL%20%2F%20RTYP%29&ERDLTkt=HX%20-%20Ratynaq&ktODMp=Nhthfg%209%2C%201995&BP=1&WNEb25u=Fabeer%20-%20IVC%20Ivraan%20Vagreangvbany%20Cynarfcbggref&xsIERvdWdsY=RV-WRG&MgTUQtODMgKE=Bcrengrq%20va%20pbbcrengvba%20jvgu%20Ivetva%20Ngynagvp&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=454&NEb25uZWxs=2005-09-16%2014%3A32%3A26&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=R2073&static=yes&width=1000&height=679&sok=JURER%20%20%28cynpr%20%3D%20%27Ybaqba%20-%20Pvgl%20%28YPL%20%2F%20RTYP%29%27%29%20%20BEQRE%20OL%20cubgb_vq%20QRFP&photo_nr=6&prev_id=927926&next_id=915407&size=L
Unfortunatly the A32X link does not work but if you do a search on a.net for the A318/A319/A320/A321 and the airline is Virgin Atlantic Airways you will get a few pics

Have you got the photos to show us Wozza?
Quite possibly Virgin Express or Virgin Sun I’m thinking? If it was in fact “Virgin Atlantic” it must have been a temporary lease to plug a gap somewhere???
