I saw an article in a magazine at the weekend about surnames, and their meaning. I’ve never thought about this before and thought I’d look up mine, what a shock :-
Definition: Ugly head; one who had an ugly head
Surname Origin: Irish, Scottish (Scots Gaelic)
Alternate Surname Spellings: KENNEDIE
My mothers maiden name was Gregory which means Watchman.
Has anyone else found the meaning or definition of their surname ?

Mine means someone originally from Scotland. My family came from Edinburgh on my father’s side a few generations ago.
On my Mother’s side the surname means someone from a certain town in Lancashire but that must have been a long time ago because we are Yorkshire/Notts and Lincs so far without any trace of Lancashire

I have no idea, but it’s probably one of those surnames that’s been made up! 😀

My surname ‘McLaughlin’ is of Irish origin and means ‘son of Laughlin’. Any Irish name pre-fixed with Mc or the Scottish equivalent ‘Mac’ means ‘ son of ‘…
Interesting then that McDonalds restaurants choose to sell ‘Big Macs’ and not ‘Big Mcs’ or indeed ‘Big Micks’ ?
“Excuse, me could I have a Big Mick ?”
“Hang on, he’s out back making the fries..” 😀

Morris….from the Welsh for ‘Maur Rys’, meaning ‘Great chief’…apparently we are related to the last King of Wales around the tenth century AD…
We’ll be back to take over the crown again in a bit..
