BIG nautical news from Gothenburg

The largest ship in the Swedish merchant fleet, Stena Arctica, has been in port for a few days here, and had to be towed in backwards because at 250 metres long she could not be turned once past the suspension bridge!
While in port she was the venue of a massive festival.
She is an oil tanker displacing 117 100 tons, and has a beam of 44 metres. Because she will operate in the Baltic, she is built to the highest ice classification.
I should state that I have no connection with Stena Line, I just happen to live opposite where she was berthed until she left at 3 pm today!

Quite interesting things ships. Don’t get mentioned much but we rely on them an awful lot.
A lot goes on that we don’t see on them when on passenger ships.
I remember going on holiday to the Isle of Wight and watching all the ships going in and out of Portsmouth and Southampton…

Here are a few pictures from two vessels in a Polish port a few days ago. Some of those containers are “mine”…

Those sort of temperatures are hard to comprehend living in a warm climate like Australia
