Hey guys and gals, im in a bit of a sticky situation. Unfortunately, i havent been at all well this week and i have a maths tutor that comes every Friday at 4:30. Last week he gave me some simultaneous Equations to perform:
i would be eternally grateful if you could show me how to do these or maybe an answer:
1)
5a – 3b = 25
3a + 3b = -9
2)
6e – 3f = 24
2e – 3f = 14
3)
3a – 5b = 3
a + 3b = -1
4)
2x + 3y = 3
3x + 2y = 7

Fascinating – haven’t seen/done any of those for donkey’s (but I can say I did spot the deliberate error!). Laviticus has a good point. There’s all this stuff you do at school/uni and then never use in day to day work (unless you’re an engineer – mate of mine designs bridges and things like that). Of course there are two purposes to this education – other than to learn the specifics (eg. algebra) you’re being taught to think and reason.

Follow that? All the other 3 follow roughly the same method. See if you can work some out….I’ve only just got home from my A-Level maths class!

5a – 3b = 25
3a + 3b = -9
multiply each equation to make ‘a’ equal:
15a – 9b = 75
15a + 15b = -45
Subtract the 2 equations, 15a is eliminated. Left with:
-24b = 120
24b = -120
b = 5
Sub b back into original equation to find a:
5a – 3(5) = 25
5a = 40
a = 8
Therefore, answers are : b = 5, a = 8
