Here is my part, a little late but you will enjoy it (I hope). East-side of the Polderbaan was closed due to construction work. So almost all the shots are made with backlight.

21. And the last one of the BVB comming in! Also a panning shot.
If possible I would like to have some advice regarding the panning shots. Such as number 21 the nose is sharp but the tail isn’t.

Dear Maikel,
Really Nice shots here,
Could you tell me how i would get to this Location from the Main Terminal?
Is it Possible to walk to or would i need to get a Bus or taxi?
Ive just come back from AMS and the Terrace was Amazing but your not close to any action on the Runway so are only Limited to the Few jets parked at the gates and the Jets Taxiing to and from.
Hope you can help
Rob

I understand, thanks! Will give it a go next time and make some shots from the side when the plane is in front of me and level.

Hi Gary and Maikel
AF-C stands for AF-continious. This means that the AF constantly adjust and tries to predict where the AF has to be at the moment of releasing the shutter. This is as opposed to AF-single which focuses on the moment you half press the button and keeps that focus through shutter release.
This panning is very confusing for the AF and it indeed will probably try to focus on the nearest point. If it also miscalculates the movement it will have its focus in the wrong position by the time the picture is taken.
Add to this the motionblur from a low shutterspeed and difration effect from using high F stops (this reduces contrast and picture quality in general) and it all boils down to a difficult picture which requires a lot of skil (and technical knowledge) or a lot of luck to get it right.
You are on the right track with using the center AF point but it will work better with the plane side on because then your whole subjet is at the same relative distance to the camera. The rest is experiment and practise.

Thanks for youre reply. On another forum they told me that panning shots are better for close-ups so 200mm+. For the autofocus point I manually had the middle of the 9 I have set up. I’m going to Frankfurt next week so I will let you guys know.

im no expert on panning but it appears likely to do with the AF area settings you had “employed” at the time, the AF has recognised the nose as the closest to the lens so therefore focused only on that, depending on the camera model you could set the AF to AF-C(for centered i believe on nikon) to get a more even focused shot, however I suppose manual ultimately would sort the problem altogther, but not practical.
Oh the korean is stunning & the canadian 737 😉
