Police escort for refuse workers
Refuse lorries on one estate are getting police escorts after reports residents were taking their frustration out on binmen about sorting rubbish.
An officer is following a council refuse truck on its rounds on the Abbey estate in Thetford, Norfolk.
The aim is to ensure that rubbish collectors are not attacked or abused.
A senior police officer said the problem centred on the wrong kind of rubbish being put in bins used for recycling.
Insp Tim Peacock said the decision to escort the lorry was taken after concerns were raised by Breckland District Council.
‘High-profile policing’
“It’s a unusual situation – I’ve never heard of the police escorting binmen on their rounds before,” he said.
“But the council raised concerns about the position the binmen were being put in and we decided that this was the best approach. It doesn’t involve a large amount of police resources or time.
“One officer followed the lorry earlier this week on part of its route around the estate. We provided a similar escort two weeks earlier. It’s high profile policing and we’ll do it for as long as we think is necessary.”
He said no-one had been arrested or charged with any offence as a result of the council’s complaints.

I can well understand the complaints from the residents.
We have two wheelie bins; one is green and the other is dark grey – guess which one is for recycling? Well, we got it wrong: the green one is absolutely not for recycling… And even what can be recycled is reason for the men from the dustcart not to take the contents away, for example unlike other areas we cannot put glass or food/drink tins in our recycling bin! But those men who empty the bins won’t tell you that, not unless they are haranged after not removing rubbish from the bins for three weeks…
Don’t mention Christmas box.

In the weird are of Burnley, we have claret wheelie for rubbish (collected once a fortnight and no side waste allowed and your lid HAS to close properly), a brown wheelie for garden waste (not collected between October and March), a blue box for tins, glass and plastic bottles (no other type of plastic allowed) a hessian sack type thing for paper and claret plastic bags for cardboard.
Rubbish one week, recycling the other, no limit to the amount of recyclable stuff you can put out, but woe be tide you put too much general rubbish out (apparently is classed as fly tipping and you will be fined)

In deepest darkest Manchester we have no fewer than 4 bins: a grey one, a blue one, a brown one and a green one.
No-one knows why………
