Help please! Tricky problem installing Mozilla Thunderbird

I have finally taken heed of advice to change from apparently virus-risky MS Outlook Express to Mozilla Thunderbird (TB). However while installing TB I suddenly get the message “A mail or newsgroup account with the same user name and server name already exists. Click Back and enter a different server name, or click Cancel.” I only have one server, as far as I know, in fact we have a network inside the block of flats where I live, so I don’t think I can offer any alternative name!
When I try to “Get mail” the message “Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server fyrskeppet.net responded: Login failed.” appears.
(fyrskeppet.net is I believe our local server inside the apartment block.)
Given this information, is anyone on the Forum clever enough to help me get on line and send/receive E-mails with TB?
If necessary please PM me with your phone number so I can talk to you and sort this out.
I am desperate, please can someone help me!

Thanks, dhfan, one weird thing was that I could send but not receive E-mails with Thunderbird.
Anyway, I have gone back to using Outlook Express, but will check out mailwasher as soon as I have time (= next week!)

You didn’t have Outlook Express running at the time did you? It’s the only thing I can think of offhand.

I’ve installed and uninstalled Thunderbird a couple of times but I’m too idle to bother setting it up.

I use Mailwasher http://www.mailwasher.net/ which is wonderful. It means you see what emails have arrived on the server and can delete the spam before it gets to your computer.
