Air Malta (KM/Malta) is reportedly planning to add a new route from Perugia to London Gatwick in October.

Am I right in thinking that this a scheduled flight rather than a charter one though ?
Its getting to the stage where the defintion between the two is quite blurred. I doubt they would have started it without some sort of a commitment form a tour operator, but I guess they will sell seats on it through the ordinary channels as well.

Dont they already do Catania-Gatwick?
Yes, they’ve been operating this route for a while now, but I believe the flight originates in Malta.
It was launched as part of their step into offering “low fares” without the frills, but not an off-shoot carrier as such.
I believe they’ve just introduced a more extensive low fares structure called “Flexifly by Air Malta” which covers more routes.

Air Malta are a decent charter operation. Had a nice few flights on them, but no IFE which is a bit of a issue on a 4/5 hour flight.

Air Malta should be flying from Bristol, Exeter and Birmingham to destinations in Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Egypt, Portugal and Austria using A320s as well as LGW – Catania this summer.

I was on board one of Air Malta’s charter flights to/from Paphos from Manchester in March/April.
In the winter from MAN Air Malta do Paphos, Arrecife, Tenerife South, Rhodes and Malaga alongside Malta.

Hmm not exactly 6th freedom, Air Malta used to own Azzura Air, which operated lots of charter flights to the UK and elsewhere, and when Azzura went bust Air Malta were bound to honour the flying programmes. I think they are doing quite well out of them, especially if they are now expanding the charter side of things.
“Freedom” rights dont really apply in the EU, as any airline in the EU can operate any route it wishes to within the EU.

Air Malta have taken massive advantage of the 6th freedom flights. They fly from most UK airports to lesiure destinations in Spain and Italy!

Couldn’t tell you any routes of Air Malta, apart from the obvious ones to Luqa 😮

Ah, this is an example of one of those ‘Sixth Freedom Flights’ (probably completely wrong??) or whatever you call them, where an airline operates a flight from one country to another, but neither of these countries are the one from which the airline originates.
