Surprised that this news has not hit the forum yet! More heritage up in smoke 🙁

Apparently the RNLI who has a brand new Lifeboat station at the end of the pier managed to evacuate the lifeboats, luckily the station itself was not damaged, although they’re going to have problems transporting the lifeboat crew to the station, at the moment they are ferrying them over using the RNLI hovercraft, stationed up the beach

Plastic water main?
I was going to suggest that they install some improved fire fighting equipment next time and now discover that they had a water main the length of the pier for this purpose made of PLASTIC! The mind boggles. No mention of arson yet 🙁

Sad Sad news, Awful to see such a thing happen again to a lovely pier, The damage looks huge far worse than the damage that finished off any hopes of Brightons West pier being restored, I am glad to see the Southend council say they will restore the pier to its best again, If it proves to be arson like it has in cases of other piers i hope they string the git who did it up.
