Claim to being Unique

Just a thought, but I reckon I am the only forumite who is, at this moment, listening to the Promenade Concert which is right now featuring the Gilbert and Sullivan operatta “H.M.S. Pinafore”.

It’s not big or clever when you swear in Russian, either.

Just added three more to my collection:
Reign of Hell
Bloody Road to Death
OGPU Prison

Now that’s a few nights of heart-crunching, teeth-grinding, stomache-turning fun ahead for me… 😀

Ah… Porta, Sven, The Legionnaire, The Old Man, Tiny…

Remember the one where Heide has his appendix removed by Porta in the back of a Puma Armoured car, using a bayonet and a bottle of schnapps…? I was cringing reading that one…

I cringed reading all of them!

It’s such a horrible shame that Sven Hassels books are out of print almost everywhere, especially since there seems to be a way big clique of fans around. I’ve only managed to find three or four books (two of ’em in English, one in Dutch) over the years in various garage sales and stuff. Absolutely love ’em, the way Hassel knows to put a nice sauce of banality over the most gruesome acts of war is brilliant.

Anyone in for a large campaign to any kind of publisher to put them back into print?

Of course, Sir Joseph would have had several cooks in his employ and thus would never have had the need to discover if he had any culinary expertise.

That’s Joseph Porter, not Joseph Porta? Now that’s a literary character you don’t want to be related to…

(for all the Sven Hassel-fans out there!)

And my claim to being unique is that one of the characters in HMS Pinafore (First Lord of the Admiralty Sir Joesph Porter) is based on one of my relatives (W.H. Smith who was First Lord of the Admiralty under Disreali and also is famous for being a newsagent and bookseller!)

In the interests of accuracy, Grey Area, I would point out that I am neither a sister, nor a cousin, nor an aunt.

Different operetta but suitably altered to have an aviation theme …

Claim to being unique

Hi Grey Area,

Glad to learn that there are at least two of us on the forum with some claim to an appreciation of culture, decency and general good behaviour of the sort that used to be espoused in the “Boys Own Paper”.
