As I sit here half submerged with the howeversomany bottles of birthday red wine coming to their end, spare a though for the passing of a UK TV icon.
Afternoons at 3.30pm on Channel 4 will never be the same again 🙁

I remember Richard Whitely when he presented “Calander” in this part of the UK. Part of my childhood memories in fact. Came as quite a shock to me too….

Thats really sad to hear,I am in Belarus at the moment and thought he was doing ok after illness,He was the first presenter on Channel 4 and seemed a really nice guy.
Maybe the show can carry on but doubt it even be near the same without his dry wit.

I wasn’t even aware the he was ill, so it was a terrible shock to learn of his death. He shan’t be forgotten, especially considering he was the first face to be seen on Channel 4 when it launched many moons ago!

At least he went out on a nine letter word-pneumonia
Richard Whitely always seemed to have a very sharp sense of humour, and I reckon that comment would have had him happily chuckling away…

very sad indeed, I can’t see countdown continuing, is there really anyone else out there who could fill his shoes? it just wouldn’t be the same without him

I heard this morning when I got up and it was a very big shock, you get so used to seeing someone on TV. He will be dearly missed :(.

I know my Nan watches Countdown so she’ll be upset
My old high school English teacher was on it in 1991. He tried to get away with inventing a word called “mid-coast”. Oh how they all laughed and laughed !!! 😀 😀 😀

Terrible shame, will be missed.

I heard this on the news as I drove to the airport at oh-dark-thirty this morning, and in my half-asleep state I wasn’t entirely sure I’d heard it correctly.
As Ren says, I do hope Countdown continues, but it’ll never be the same without old Twice Nightly Whitely and his ‘pair of w@nkers’.
RIP Richard.

I hope Countdown continues in tribute.
I’ll be sending a floral tribute in the form of a “pair of w*nkers” in the morning. 😉
Long live Richard. 😎
