Some shots from Athens

Well I made it back from Athens in time for Christmas, so I thought I’d post some pics of somewhere different for a change.
There’s quite a few of them so be warned. Again photoshop will diminish the quality somewhat, sorry about that.

These first ones are on the way to Ioannina from Athens (LGAV-LGIO)
Ioannina is a CAT C airfield so we needed extra training to be able to operate into there.

The first two are on take off from Athens

Airborne somewhere over Middle Greece

Thought this cloud formation was very ncie

Then after a go-around off the first attempt we tried to get back in and got visual. The MDA for this approach is 3,500ft.
As you can see we’re descending into the valley of death, with 7,000ft mountains either side of us.

This low lying cloud is what stopped us getting in off the first approach

Touchdown

These next few were of the 2nd trip to Belgrade in Serbia (LGAV-LYBE). This was, I have to say the most interesting nights flying I’ve had. It was one of those nights where I wish I was tucked up in bed asleep. We had an 80-90 mile squall of thunderstorms blocking our path and we were fast approaching another massive cell head on with no way through. The lightning was flashing all around us and then we witnessed the old St Elmos Fire. My windshield was glowing green with lightning bolts going across it every few seconds. Anyway we managed to find our way through without being struck, then when we got to Belgrade we were met with a foot of snow.

Very interesting shots indeed, Deano. St. Elmo’s Fire must have been quite something to see!

Thanks for sharing these, much appreciated. 🙂

I don’t normally comment on pictures but must say good effort, very interesting and thanks for taking the time to put them on. Would be interested to see if you have any interesting pictures of any aircraft machines in Albainia.

This next set was of a trip from Athens to Tirana in Albania. (LGAV-LATI)

On departure from Athens we can see the airport behind us.

In front of us was a great view of the old airport, our hotel is down there next to the airport on the coastline

A closer view of the old airport. What is apparent is how populated Athens is. Apparently 70% of of population of Greece live in Athens. All those houses you can see are not your standard 2 story houses, they are 5-6 story apartment blocks which must house at least 40 people each. They stretch as far as the eye can see. It is quite amazing.

A look back at the new airport.

Some snowcapped mountains en-route

Then on the ground I thought I’d open the refuel panel and dial in what we needed, there’s no way the refueler is going to know how to do it, they’ve only just got electricity in this part of the world 😉

Then when we got back to Athens, and whilst waiting for the engineers I thought I’d take a pic of the baby Dash parked next to us. How cupid.

I’m off out again at the end of Jan so I’ll try and get some more interesting ones of the Greek Islands.
