My Brother in Law took these pics of a French Air Ambulance exercise for “base jumpers” at Montagne Ste Victoire in Aix En Provence. Not a sport I would care to try.

These are nice photo’s.Are you sure it is an ambulance? It seems to be a S.A.R helicopter as it has a winch.Anyway, what are “base jumpers”?
Yes you are probably right about it being an S.A.R. helicopter, my brother in law only thought it might be some kind of exercise with the Base Jumping. As has already ready been described what that is. Each to their own sport I suppose but it looks like madness to me.

The ‘E’ is for earth, rather appropriate seeing that quite a few of them end up six feet under it.

BASE jumpers are those people with parachutes who jump off of buildings, into caves and the like. Skydiving without the aircraft.
Can only remember what the first three stand for
Bridges
Aerials
Skyscrapers
