I’ve noticed that Central Wings two letter code is C0. This seems an odd allocation since, I would guess, it’s bound to get confused with Continentals CO. Does anyone know if they choose their own code – or is it just given to them?

I think when the codes were introduced the big airlines of the time had some say in the matter. NW, UA, AA, and BA for example. TWA also had TW I think.

I think many airlines in the past were able to request codes from IATA, but the actual decision was out of their hands. I guess this is getting far more difficult now as the number of airliens keeps growing.
I also have a vague recollection of an airline purchasing the right to use as code from another airline because it suited them better. But don’t take my word on that as I may be COMPLETELY wrong.

Yes the 2 letter or number codes are issued. I dont think there is many examples of when there could be confusion.

I believe the ICAO/FAA issue the 2 letter codes. Most don’t make sense at all which would indicate that airlines don’t get to pick their codes.
