Why is my PC sound so poor?

The sound is quite distorted.

Just checking that I havn’t missed any setting adjustments in Control Panel, there is nothing really TO adjust. volume up or down, no ‘distortion’ control that I can see.

Is it just down to a cheap soundcard and small speakers? (Realtek AC 97 Audio soundcard).
