When did bmi launch their first international route and what was it?

This 707 is pictured on the LAX-LGW run!

Was there a tech stop on this route?

On a related note, when did Bermuda II come about? Also, what was Bermuda I?

I believe the 1st international route out of LHR for them was Amsterdam in 1986 (can’t find any notes about that route in my 1985 reference book)

Nope… If we’re talking LHR, BMA operated LHR-Stragburg on the Viscount many years before that. When it came to starting the trunk international routes from LHR, at the time there was a rule in place that prohibited airlines from opening NEW INTERNATIONAL routes from LHR unless they already had international operations from the airport. BMA used the fact that they’d operated the route to Strasburg to get around the rule and launch services to AMS.

British Midland Airways (as was) operated 707’s back in the 70’s and 80’s on long haul routes including JFK

Charters rather than scheduled services though.

First international scheduled service by Derby Aviation/Airways, the precursor to today’s bmi, was Burnaston to Ostend (via Birmingham for customs) started in 1954 and operated by Rapides.

Thanks. Derby Aviation, British Midland or bmi – might as well know all three

Tut! Semantics……….. 😉

Midland’s first international route was Derby (Burnaston) – Ostend in 1956 with DC3s.

Let’s be a bit pedantic – weren’t they known as Derby Aviation back then (I’m far too young to know)? I believe the 1st international route out of LHR for them was Amsterdam in 1986 (can’t find any notes about that route in my 1985 reference book).

Ahhh…. it was a rebranding exercise, nothing more.

Same company, different label. 😉

Ahem…….

If we’re talking about transatlantic routes by British Midland, you need to go a bit further back than that. 😉

LOL well bmi he asked for 😀

And to think Burnaston is now a Toyota Factory, time have changed

Not sure if this’ll do, but their 1st transatlantic route was in April 2001 to Washington
