Cloudy Thursday at Schiphol [11 pics]

Last Thursday, I took a day trip to Amsterdam with a friend of mine to watch some aeroplanes. Unfortunately the sun didn’t want to come along other than for a few minutes, so the photos are a bit grey but there were a few interesting objects passing by…

Spent a few hours on the spotters’ site at the Kaagbaan and first out was this Air Astana 757. Nice to see.

Then came an old lady (well, built in 1980 actually) – a Kalitta 747-209F

A modern favourite of mine – the 777 in a well-known blue hue…

Another one – in another great livery

First surprise of the day – TACV Cabo Verde Airlines 757!

Then we went to the Polderbaan and took a 2 km walk to find a spot near the touchdown zone at runway 18R. DAS Air Cargo DC-10-30F – another nice surprise!

Next threeholer was this MD-11F.

KLM Asia (didn’t know they still existed) 747-400 hits the runway…

…followed by a Polar Air Cargo one

When we arrived, we saw this odd fellow. A Sun Country 737-800 with Transavia titles! In the afternoon it arrived back after a flight from Madrid. It turned out this was it’s premier flight for Transavia who has leased it, it had apparently arrived on delivery from the USA shortly before!

And finally, this very odd fellow. Tunisian Air Force C-130 with dual military/civilian markings! When we were about to drive back to the terminal, a Dutch spotter asked us if the Tunisian Herc had landed. Apparently it was very unique and awaited, but landed early… he got disappointed but hopefully he caught it by the cargo terminal later on.

That’s that! Hope you enjoyed!

It’s always the unexpected aircraft that makes it a worthwhile afternoon! Great shots!

This year there will be no staatsloterij logojet. Also, the new livery has been postponed till the end of the year. The livery that had been chosen was finally dropped after all since it was too “shouty”. Not seen the proposal myself though.

How did you find the spots? Had a local showing you around? The spot on the Kaagbaan is easy enough to find, but the spot at the Polderbaan is a bit harder.

Thanks for great info! I saw one all-white Transavia 737s wearing the logo seen on their website – the ‘new’ logo which looks awful. Is this the logo the new, postponed, livery will use? If so, hope it’s postponed indefinetly…

There is a Norwegian spotters’ site which has a section on Schiphol: http://www.plane-spotter.com/Reports/AMS_trip_2003.htm, including a very good PDF file with a map, frequencies and general hints for great spotting. That’s where I found the Polderbaan site, but to get there we had to rent a Volkswagen Lupo – an interesting experience in many ways… 😀 Will come to AMS later this summer.

Nice photos, and indeed the tunisean herc is a rarity. Actually, any herc is rare at AMS as military flights usually go to EIN or MAA.

The Sun Country/Transavia hybrid arrived last week. It has been leased for 4 weeks, so in three weeks time it will go back. Next to that plane there are also two 738W’s from South African Airlines. They have been painted in an interim livery.

The DAS Air Cargo DC-10 is a regular here. Everyday there are one or two flights from them. TACV is also regular, but only has two or three weekly flights. Same goes for Air Astana. Never seen Air Astana at AMS myself unforunately. They days they fly in are during the week when I got to work.

KLM Asia is still alive and kicking. There are even a few 747s in the new livery with asia titles.

Superb stuff, you were especially lucky with the Tunisian Herc. I’m certainly looking forward to popping back to AMS for a day next month 😀
