Do you want Daleks?

No Daleks in Doctor Who’s return
The BBC has confirmed the Daleks will not appear in its new Doctor Who series after a failure to agree terms.
Talks between the BBC and the estate of late sci-fi writer Terry Nation, who created the Daleks, broke down over issues of editorial control.

A BBC spokeswoman said: “After lengthy negotiations, the BBC and Terry Nation have been unable to reach an agreement on the terms of the use of the Daleks.”

The Terry Nation estate said it was “bitterly disappointed”.

The metal monsters were voted TV’s most evil villains in a poll last year.

Fans had hoped to see the Daleks’ return in the series, scheduled for release on BBC One in early 2005, but feared copyright issues might stand in the way.

The BBC spokeswoman said: “The BBC offered the very best deal possible but ultimately we were not able to give the level of editorial influence that the Terry Nation estate wished to have.”

But an agent for the Nation estate accused the BBC of ignoring copyright laws and said the corporation was trying to “ruin the brand of the Daleks”.

Agent Tim Hancock, who represents the Nation estate, said: “We wanted the same level of control over the Daleks that we have enjoyed for the last 40 years.

“If the BBC wanted to re-make any of George Lucas’ films, you can bet George Lucas would have something to say about it. ”

Mr Hancock accused the BBC of lying about the reasons a deal had not been made.

He said the BBC had tried to commission a cartoon series about gay Daleks for BBC Three.

He also said the corporation had allowed Warner Bros to use the Daleks in the recent movie Loony Tunes without consulting the Terry Nation estate.

“We want to protect the integrity of the brand,” he said.

Mr Hancock said the estate would be willing to make a new deal if the BBC accepted the arrangement that had been in place for the last 40 years.

Writer Russell T Davies said he was “disappointed” by the decision but it would not affect the success of the series.

He said: “We are reinventing Doctor Who for a 21st Century audience with a fantastic writing team and exciting new challenges.

“We are disappointed that the Daleks will not be included but we have a number of new and exciting monsters.

“And I can confirm we have created a new enemy for the Doctor which will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.”

As Doctor Who’s sworn enemies, the Daleks were voted the most evil villains on television in a vote by more than 3,000 GMTV viewers in 2003.

Christopher Eccleston, star of films like Shallow Grave and The Others, has been confirmed as the new Doctor Who.

Former pop star Billie Piper has been chosen to play his sidekick Rose Tyler.

I think that it is good they aren’t coming back. Yeah they were a mojor part of Dr Who, but at least now some of the other ‘baddies’ will get more light.

But to be honest, i think that it has had its time and just because there is a sever lack of good programming on terrestrial tv (there are some exceptions) it shouldn’t warrent them to have to emake old programs.

Where are all the new (good) ideas!

As an interesting (to me anyway) aside, whilst working for a Warbird rebuilding organisation some years ago on a farm in the middle of nowhere, it was brought to my attention that some of the original Daleks lived on a neighbouring farm!!!! One of them subsequently turned up outside a local shop as an attraction which later had to be removed as it used to scare drivers!!!! Isn’t Suffolk an odd place

BTW those little plastic stools, with retractable wheels, that you see in shops are also known as ‘Daleks’, as well as the more official ‘kick-stool’

No need to be scared Geoff, just go upstairs, they’ll never be able to get you.

You seem to have forgotten that I live in a bungalow – no stairs 😮

BTW can you PM your mobile No for next Saturday.

Make your own Dalek:-
http://members.tripod.com/~DalekFactory/getpattern.gif
Instructions
Cut out each piece along the solid lines, then using the back of your scissors and a ruler score along the dashed lines. Finally fold and glue each section in the order listed below.

BASE
1. Cut out the base and score the dashed lines on the A tabs, then fold these tabs down.
2. Cut and score the strip forming the base skirt. Then starting with the small link tab 12, glue each A section to the appropriate A section on the base working backwards from A11 through A1.

BODY
3. After cutting it out and scoring it, fold all the “2” tabs on panel C1 down and glue the edges marked “2” to these. Do the same with the “3” tabs on the other side. This brings edge B6 over tab B6. Glue these together and the body is formed.
4. Now slot the body “lugs” into the positioning slots in the base, gluing tabs B1-B5 to the positions marked.

SHOULDERS
5. This part is tricky. Carefully cut and score it, then fold the glue tabs of panel C1 up those of E1 down. The side with tab D on it is then wrapped around panel C1 gluing as you go-BUT MAKE SURE THAT C1 IS GLUED 2mm UP FROM D’s BOTTOM EDGE, that is-level with the dot-dash line, so that this edge has a 2mm overhang. Now glue the top edge flush with panel E1. Repeat this with side D1 and when D1 is over D glue these together.

NECK & HEAD
6. Cut out the neck strip with its 8 slots and glue edge F1 to tab F1. Then cut out the neck rings (F,G,H) remembering to split the G ang H rings at G1 and H1.
7. Now cut out the head, making straight score lines where shown, and cutting curved edges on each alternate segment. Discard the shaded bits on the glue tabs. Now make the head into a dome by bowing the panels down so that the glue tabs on the straight (scored) panels slide under the curved edges of their neighbors. When the score is bowed enough to exactly match the curved edge of its neighbors-glue the panels together in that position. Work your way around the head gluing two panels at a time.
8. Now glue the neck to the head by using the square glue tabs on the neck. (Make sure the head sits levelly on the neck.) Next slip the G and H rings nto these slots on the neck, then place a blob of glue onto each of the rounded F tabs and slip these into these slots in the bottom neck ring (E1). Now fold these over so they glue flat onto the underside of E1.
9.Now the head and neck can be glued to the shoulders E1 to E1 (theI1 slot should face forwards), and then the shoulders to the body C1 to C1.

EYE
10. Cut out and fold the two halves of the eye together (I to I1) and glue this in the I1 slot to the head.

GUN
11. The gun is in two pieces. Cut out the shaded centre slot in piece J1 and slip the notched piece into this. The J1 tab is then folded along the crease and is glued into the J1 slot in the shoulders.

ARM
12. The arm can be strengthened by gluing the two halves around a matchstick as shown in the diagram (never was a diagram-webmaster). Like the gun, the K1 tab is folded and glued into the K1 slot in the shoulders.

Maybe this decision will get rid of all those awful home-made lumps of junk!

Weren’t those sucker arms telescopic?
As a matter of interest, when did Daleks last appear on TV? I seem to remember them appearing in black and white episodes around 1963, but I’ve never seen any since then.

Well at least I wont have to hide behind the sofa this time then. They scared the hell out of me, but I still had to watch.

My other favourites were the Cybermen, will they be in the new series?

Geoff.
