Referee under police protection – thanks to The Sun

Are England fans such bad losers? Whatever happened to fair play?

Referee under police protection
By Sebastian Usher
BBC world media reporter

The Swiss referee who disallowed a goal by England in their Euro 2004 quarter-final with Portugal says he has been put under police protection.
Urs Meier told a Swiss radio station that he been advised to go into hiding after receiving death threats.

He has been accused by England’s tabloid press of being responsible for the national team’s defeat.

Mr Meier said he had received more than 16,000 e-mails after his address was printed in a newspaper.

Security problems

Mr Meier told Swiss Radio International that he stood by his decision on the goal, but that the public response had come as a shock.

“We have security problems in my office. We have security problems for myself and this is not the right way to handle this referee decision if it is right or not right,” he said.

His house was tracked down by reporters from England’s largest-circulation tabloid, the Sun, who planted an English flag outside it.

British MPs have also tabled a motion in the House of Commons criticising the quality of refereeing in the tournament, the Press Association news agency reported.

Mr Meier said he found the “overheated” reaction from the English media and fans hard to reconcile with the image he used to have of the country.

“I was always of the opinion that fair play in England is really important, and also the respect from the officials, but I never expected this reaction,” he said.

“I hope that after the Euro and after some days, they forget something and I have my private life back.”

The ‘newspaper’ that gave out his home address (anyone know if it was just The Sun?) should have its permission to trade as a newspaper withdrawn.
That is so so stupid. It is giving England – and by default Britain/UK – the kind of bad name that is difficult to shake off. Cretins.

The ‘beautiful game’? Don’t make me laugh…

Flood, if fair play existed then he would have allowed the goal.

😡 If fair play existed in English football then the referee would not have had to shelter behind police protection because his word would have been immediately accepted as law. 😡
What is it you want – a freaking red carpet for Thick Head to follow all the way to the goal, clearly marked out as a no-go area for the opposition? But of course the FA overturns referees decisions every week!;) How silly of me!
The proper authorities to make any decision about that event would have long ago announced that they disagreed with his judgement – but they haven’t: live with it. All the people who sent messages to his home should be traced and the appropriate action taken (it won’t happen but the threat would be a real sphincter-tightener to those scum); The Sun should change its ink to make it more suited for use in public toilets; the editor, the sports editor, and the reporters concerned should lose their jobs purely as a warning that this is what happens when you incite a riot against someone innocently carrying out their job – and that is before criminal preceedings begin (but this too will never happen). Any Sun readers care to comment?

It is just a little thing, but maybe it is the sort of repetitive and stupid irritation that would tip the appropriate authorities into telling the England team that they bring nothing but sour grapes and criminal intent to the party; and not to return until it is sorted? After all, what would happen if all international referees got together and agreed not to take charge of an England game because of the bad attitude of the fans and the potential for complete character assasination by the ‘popular’ media?
Would that make you all sit up and take notice? Would that change attitudes?
Oh yeah – nice to see, Minidoh, that you still manage to bring the whole event back into an anti Europe rant at the end; clearly I forgot that the referee was a European first, referee second…

Hand, I think we must do. But I dont think we’d have enough police to go and arrest all the people who sent him death threats! Down here in Devon, at night time there is one police car for the entire south Devon region. Its a joke.

We have a law here against: “Incitation to hate and murder”. Do you have the same thing in the UK?

Surely the referee’s decision was proved correct in the countless replays that were shown anyway? The newspaper’s action was indefensible, in my opinion

Many referees have said it is a goal, and many have said it isnt. Same with the experts, many have said it was, and many have said it wasn’t. Flood, if fair play existed then he would have allowed the goal. But I dont think you will find many games without cheats, and in many situations in life people cheat. Life isnt a fair game though is it?! I do think the Sun went way too far by publishing his e-mail. But then again didnt Tony B when he said the EU wasnt a threat to our national identity?

The Sun is a nasty little rag and it epitomises Football Yob Culture. After all it is but a game, not life or death.

Rugby, Tennis, etc dont seem to attract the same hard core pro-literians?

I Rest my case.

Difficult that one because many experts including Referee’s have said it was a goal. The thing with Football is it creats huge debate and i am sure this decision will always do that. The thing i can not understand is how that game led to idiots smashing up my hometown(god knows what thats ment to prove who they think they were venting their anger on?) but thats another story.

Not sure fair play really exists anyway I feel its wrong whats gone on with the Referee since this game i am a England fan if that cap fits i am pasionate for everything we take part in including football rugby tennis(oops tim) etc I feel that somehow the Referee’s job these days is a thankless one and if he makes a mistake he has to live with it this is harder now with modern media and wall to wall TV coverage I never supported the second referee on a video link to watch and replay things but now i see it would help take the flack off the Referee which can not be a bad thing.

I think that if there ever happens something to that referee, the “journalists” who publicised his name should get charged for what happens.

And I’ll never understand how people can react violently because their team lost a match on thet stupid game called football…

It more and more reminds me of the Roman Empire… “Panem et Circences”… 😡

That’s a shame. Maybe even worst. Those tabloids make me sick.
