This has probably been done to death over here but I’m new to this side of the forum. All this talk recently of Curve, PWEI,the Pixies etc has made me think perhaps theres a few alternative music fans over here. Though it would be interesting just to here what everyone likes. Best start with me then…
My interest starts with the New York Dolls working up to your classic punk bands, The Clash, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Undertones, Buzzcocks, Joy Division etc before moving on to my personnel era which was 89-94 really and the great indie scene of the time starting with Birdland and The Primitives moving through PWEI, Carter USM, Neds, Sensless Things, Curve, Lush, Manic Street Preachers and on to These Animal Men, S*M*A*S*H, Echobelly, Elastica, Sleeper etc and finnishing about the time Oasis turned the indie scene into the lets all copy Oasis and go MOR scene!
As for favourite gigs my alltime fav has got to be Birdland playing the Bracknell Cellar Bar after they were famous. Just me on the floor and the band and in my home town to – NO ONE plays Bracknell. There are to many other memories to mention here but the Manic Street Preachers tours were always good for drama, especially as I used to go to every gig! I used to go to about 3 or 4 gigs a week in those days so I saw a lot of bands and some in funny situations like Radiohead supporting The Sultans of Ping FC at the Reading After Dark Club! One band mentioned recently that I have not seen is The Pixies although I would like to, did see a band called Nova Mob a couple of times though. I beleive one of them was in The Pixies although it obviously wasn’t Frank or Kelly. Don’t remeber much of them other than they were rubbish, usually went for the support band – ‘Sunshot’ normally.
Anyway I could talk all night but I won’t, over to you. There is just one rule though if anyone tries to tell me Morrisey or The Smiths are any good then a place will have to be arranged for fisty cuffs… 😉 Only good thing he ever did was write an book on The New York Dolls!

Richey Edwards, god bless him – he could ‘just’ about play as well dispite all the rumours to the contray. If you listen carfully to your bootlegs you can just about here him during certain songs, Rory always made sure he wasn’t turned up to high though!
Neal h , good selection of bands there chief!
Live Aid II, just need some bands hey looking at the proposed little list there, maybe whats left of Tears For Fears will play this time instead of being the only band to turn it down like last time. Best go and fall into my pit know, have discovered a new Real Ale tonight called Miss Luscious and have had far to much – ‘ it’s 99p a pint ‘!!!! I’m not looking forward to the hangover, work and everything tommorow.

One of the best gigs I ever saw was Sepultura’s first U.K. gig in 1989 supporting German thrashers Sodom who were comprehensively blown off stage by the ‘Seps’. Sodoms misery was compounded during a Motorhead cover, when they forgot the lyrics! 😮

Ohh and talking about Gigs, Bono is thinking about a Live Aid II with Coldplay, Radiohead, Oasis … Will it be the same without Bob Geldof?
Or not – according to certain reports.

In my opinion Oasis musically beats Blur by many miles.

Ill admit it, Ive never even heard of all the bands youve mentioned, except for the Pixies which Ive seen mentioned on this forum and had to do a yahoo search to find out who they were. I lived in Seattle in the mid to late 90s and can tell you that the image of them being a grunge/indie haven is a bit of a myth. They only have one alternative station called 107 The End, which plays crap reject grunge. The rest of the radio dial is filled with classic rock, they probably have about 10 classic rock stations just on FM. Then when I was in San Diego, they only have one heavy rock station that plays Tool, Creed and Metalica 24 hours a day, and a sort of lost alternative station whos stuck on Bob Marley.
Could be Brad, grunge has always been more popular in Europe than in the US. Pixies never ‘made’ it in the US, don’t know why, maybe because they didn’t have the ‘looks’. But as long as the US is exporting their good music, we can send our musical garbage back to the US (and they like it 😎 )
One more thing, are the Manic Street Preachers still performing, since they lost (literally) their bass-guitar player, must be already ten years ago though. How was that sorry again, great band though!!!!
Would love to see the Pogues too. In 1995, Pinkpop, the leadsinger, Shane MacGowan was so drunk, they had to carry him of stage. The band dumped him and he went solo. 😮
One more question. Best britpop band of the 90’s. Blur or Oasis? I prefer Blur, especially because Daman Albarn isn’t such an ***** as the gallagher-brothers. Love Gorillaz too.

Strummer was brilliant when I saw him – and i didnt expect him to be even remotely interesting. Absolutely superb performance.
Thunders brought heroin into the UK music scene. Sorry, but that man is worth nothing but my disgust.

“working up to your classic punk bands, The Clash, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Undertones, Buzzcocks, Joy Division etc “
Sorry. Needs editing:
“working up to your classic punk bands, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Buzzcocks,”
or:
“working up to your classic new wave, Undertones, Joy Division etc “
or:
“working up to your ****e American bandwagon bands, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, etc”
Sorry.
Apart from that, I am of varied tastes.
Dylan, Doors, Sex Pistols, Damned, Stiff Little Fingers, Stranglers in the main. A bit of other similar stuff too now and again.
