Politics (Yawn)

Tonight, on ITN (Britains Independant Television News) there was a bit about the fact that there are to be elections shortly to elect MEPs (Member of the European Parliament) to represent us in Brussels. They were asking people in the street if they could recognise the bearded gentleman standing next to a labour MP I can’t remember being interviewed in some town that I can’t remember either.
Would you be surprised to learn that no one they asked knew that he had been representing them as their MEP for around ten years?
This could be for various reasons:-
i/ the people are lazy: they don’t care about Europe, they don’t care about politics, and they are not really interested anyway because one polititian is just like the next.
ii/ the media is lazy: who cares about polititians – they are just men in grey suits who assault us with sound-bites and won’t answer a straight question with a straight answer, plus these will be based in Brussels and won’t give a damn about sorting out bin collection times, opening nursery schools, or providing quotes before deadlines.
iii/ the government is lazy: if they really wanted us to know what was happening they would go all out to promote it – instead it ends up as a cheeky piece to camera asking if you know who that man is…

I am sure these elections are important; I just don’t have a clue about what we are supposed to be voting for, nor what the parties want our votes for, or even if it is worth the effort of finding out since the parties all seem to be rather uncomplaisant – at least in the media and in my area.

Still, we can always carry on grumbling about polititians who couldn’t give a toss about our desires or requirements, or how much of a gravy train the EU is.

What is the point of it then if it is not to impose other nationalities road signs upon us?
And, more seriously, will there ever be a common agreement over roadcraft and signs? Am I right in thinking, for example, that the French have a different system to us as regards roundabouts? – Nermal

Give it time, the European Parliment is bound to come up with new legislation.

Geforce I disagree. I know a lot of Irish and they are all adament to keep their road signs in English. The same as the French do not want them in Engilsh at all, and the English obviously want to and should keep them in Engilsh.

True, and to be honest, I’m going to vote for Europe for the same party as regional elections (which take place at the same date). Since European elections are organised nationally, and are about national points of discussion, I really don’t know what this party represents for Europe as a whole. Honestly, Lithuanians or Irish are not interrested in the fact that road signals are in French or DutcH
