Finally, someone in the security council has made an effort to stop US/UK meddling in the Cyprus affair. Its bad enough that the UN commisioner in charge is obviously biased as hell, and is trying to swing the vote by hijacking Greek-Cypriot TV stations. Fortunately, they cut him off.

All of this sounds weird to me too.
The Turks and the Greeks hate each other since centuries. Many wars and conflits are part of their history.
This reunification didn’t sound like a win-win agreement.
Listen : The Greeks from Cyprus would join the EU whatever the result of the referendum was: why the hell would they accept to reunifite with the Turks then??

If this is an EU matter why is the UN security council even involved?
Surely entry into the EU is a political issue for the EU alone to decide…
I can therefore understand why Russia would veto it, but why was the UN SC even considering the subject in the first place. Is this the meddling you are talking about Twi?

Could someone supply details of the meddling by the US and the UK.
Thanks

A few questions, Twilight2002:
1. Precisely why did Greek Cypriots reject the unification, what was it about the deal they did not like?
2. Where do you go from here, what are the prospects of a future reunification?
3. Is there fear in Greek Cyprus that the northern republic might get recognized by the outside now that talks of reunification failed?

Yeah, probably. As Hammy implied, the US government possibly thought it was where Cyprus Hill came from…

US/UK meddling?
By: escuincle - 28th April 2004 at 12:02
So I am assuming if it is an EU thing the Russians didn’t veto it… so who did?
Russia did veto a Security Council draft resolution on Cyprus.
here is a link from the U.N.:

A pity the outcome of the referendum was so negative. But we have to respect people’s opinion. However, this will probably also mean that Turkey won’t join the EU for many more years.

Anyone think that Hammy has been indulging in the same ‘medicinal’ herbs that Cypress Hill are famous for?;)
